Open Front Lace Cardigan

This cardigan features short sleeves and an easy-to-remember lace pattern. There’s no shaping, so it will fly right off the needles and become your most versatile cardigan yet.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: Finished Bust Size 35¼ (38, 41, 43¾, 46½, 49½), to fit bust 33¼ (36, 39, 41¾, 44½, 47½), intended to be worn with 2” of positive ease

Gauge: 17 sts and 29 rows = 4” in pattern stitch after wet blocking

Materials

Yarn:

Medium Weight Yarn Berroco Fuji (38% silk, 25% cotton, 22% rayon, 15% nylon; 125 yards [115 meters]/50 grams): #9270 Orchid (6 (6, 7, 7, 8, 8) skeins)

Needles: US size 7 (4.5 mm): 32” [80 cm] circulars; US size 6 (4.0 mm) 60” [150 cm] circulars; US size 6 (4.0 mm) set of double pointed needles

Notions: Two stitch markers, tapestry needle, stitch holders or waste yarn

Special Stitches

CDD (centered double decrease): Slip 2 stitches together as if to knit, knit 1 stitch, pass slipped stitches over

Row 1 (RS): *K1, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, k2tog tbl; rep from * to 1 st before end of row, k1.
Row 2 and all other WS rows (WS): Purl all stitches.

Pattern Notes

Rosalie is knitted flat in one piece starting at the back. Stitches are cast on for the sleeves and after knitting the required sleeves, bound off again. The fronts are worked separately down. Arm and sides are seamed afterward. Stitches are picked up for sleeve ribbing and front bands.

Next Row (RS): K2, remove maker, work 31 (31, 43, 43, 49, 55) sts in Stitch Pattern , k2, place those 35 (35, 47, 47, 53, 59) sts just worked   to stitch holder or scrap yarn, place next 31 (37, 31, 37, 31, 37) sts to stitch holder or scrap yarn, k2, pm, work to end of row as established.

Left Sleeve

Cont as established until Left Sleeve meas 14 (15, 16, 16, 17)” [36 (38, 41, 41, 43, 43) cm] from sleeve CO, ending with a Row 7 of Stitch Pattern.

Left Front

Right Sleeve

Return Right Sleeve sts on holder back to working needles. Join yarn on WS, p2, pm, work to 2 sts before end of row as established, pm, p2.

Finishing

Sew side seams and sleeve seams.

Sleeve Ribbing

With double pointed needles and RS facing, pick up and knit a multiple of 4 sts (3 sts out of 4 rows) and work in 2×2 ribbing for 1½” [4 cm].

Bind off all stitches in ribbing.

Do the same for second sleeve.

Front Bands

Sizes 35¼, 41, 46½

With smaller needle and RS facing, pick up and knit a multiple of 4 sts + 2 (3 sts out of 4 rows) along the Right Ffront, place the 31 (-, 31, -, 31, -) sts from holder onto needles, pick up and knit a multiple of 4 sts + 2 (3 sts out of 4 rows) along the Left Front. Turn work. There is now an odd number of stitches on your needles.

Decrease one stitch in the first row.

Work Front Bands in 2×2 ribbing.

Row 1 (WS): P3, *k2, p2; rep from * to 1 sts before end of row, p1.
Row 2 (RS): K3, *p2, k2; rep from * to 1 sts before end of row, k1.

Rep Rows 1-2 for 3” [7.5 cm], ending with a WS row.

Bind off all sts.

Sizes 38, 43¾, 49½

With smaller needle and RS facing, pick up and knit a multiple of 4 sts (3 sts out of 4 rows) along the Right Front, place the – (37, -, 37, -, 37) sts from holder onto needles, pick up and knit a multiple of 4 sts (3 sts out of 4 rows) along the Left Front.

Turn work. There is now an odd number of stitches on your needles.

Decrease one stitch in the first row.

Work Front Band in 2×2 ribbing.

Row 1 (WS): P3, *k2, p2; rep from * to 1 sts before end of row, p1.
Row 2 (RS): K3, *p2, k2; rep from * to 1 sts before end of row, k1.

Rep Rows 1-2 for 3” [7.5 cm], ending with a WS row.

Bind off all stss.

Weave in all ends. Block piece to measurements.
