Butterfly Fields Washcloth

Butterfly Fields is a washcloth pattern based on a variation of the butterfly stitch. Framed by garter stitch, this washcloth only requires you to know how to work knitting and slip stitches. This pattern is a great introduction to slip stitches or a quick gift for a more experienced knitter.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: Small (Large)/ 7.5 x 7.5 (9 x 9)”

Gauge: 10 sts and 12 rows = 2” [5 cm] in garter stitch after blocking

Materials

Yarn:

Medium Weight Yarn Willow Yarns Sudsy (85% cotton, 15% polyester; 175 yards [160 meters]/100 grams): #0013 Blue Mint (1 (1) balls)

Needles: US 5 (3.75 mm) straight or circular needle

Notions: Stitch markers, tapestry needle

Special Stitches

Butterfly Stitch Pattern

(worked over 16 rows)

Rows 1, 3, 5, 7 (WS): Sl 5 sts with yarn in back, being careful not to pull or cause fabric to pucker, k next 5 sts.
Rows 2, 4, 6 (RS): K all sts.
Row 8: K7 sts, on next st, k into st 2 rows below, pulling yarn up and around floating strands, drop next st off needle, k next 2 sts.
Rows 9, 11, 13, 15: K5 sts, sl 5 sts with yarn in back, being careful not to pull or cause fabric to pucker.
Rows 10, 12, 14: K all sts.
Row 16: K2 sts, on next st, k into st 2 rows below, pulling yarn up and around floating strands, drop next st off needle, k next 7 sts.

Pattern

CO 36 (46) sts.

Rows 1-6: K all sts.

Next 80 (96) Rows: K3, work 3 (4) repeats of Butterfly Stitch, k3.

Next 6 Rows: K all sts.

Bind off 33 (43) sts.

Over next 3 sts, begin working I-cord for 2”.

Finish off. Fold loop over and sew to washcloth.

Finishing

Block to measurements, if desired. Yarn will fluff and soften up after running it through the dryer once or twice.yarn ball

    Its been 3+ weeks. I guess the designer doesn’t want to clarify her design. Why bother posting it, if she/he doesn’t want to be helpful.

        Donna, apologies in the delay getting back to you. My husband has been deployed for training for the reserves. I’ve been juggling kids and household.

        Could you be a little bit more specific about what you were having trouble with? Have you done slip stitches before? Making a video to clarify is difficult because I don’t quite have a good setup for it, never mind a period of time when my children won’t interrupt, but I can perhaps point you towards something that might help.
