Noelle Hat

Noelle is a loose-fitting, three-color slip stitch design hat with Garter Rib trim worked in in-the-round with Aran weight yarn. Shown in two sizes, you can easily customize this hat to be larger or smaller by adding or subtracting stitches in multiples of six. Noelle is a great hat for the girl who is hard to buy for.

Size: 19 (21.5)” circumference x 9 (9.5)” height. 

Gauge: 15 sts and 24 rows = 4” (10 cm) in St st; 16 sts and 22 rows = 4” (10 cm) in slip stitch pattern

Medium weight yarnYarn: O-wool Classic Worsted (100% certified organic Merino; 89 yards [81 meters]/50 grams): Garnet (MC, 1 skein), Basalt (CC1, 1 skein), Pasture Rose (CC2, 1 skein)

Needles: US size 9 (5.5 mm) 16” circular; US size 9 (5.5 mm) 1 set DPNs, or size needed to obtain gauge

Notions: Marker, tapestry needle

Garter Rib Pattern

Rnd 1: *K3, p3; rep from * to * to end.

Rnd 2: Knit all sts.

Rep Rnds 1-2 for patt.

Colorwork Pattern

Rnd 1: With CC1, *sl 1 wyib, k5; rep from * to end.

Rnd 2: With CC1, k2, *sl 3 wyif, k3; rep from * to last 4 sts, sl 3 wyif, k1.

Rnd 3: With CC2, k1, sl 1 wyib, k3, *sl 1 wyib, k1, sl 1 wyib, k3; rep from * to last st, sl 1 wyib.

Rnd 4: With CC2, knit all sts.

Rnd 5: With MC, sl 2 wyib, k1, insert needle under loose CC1 strand on front of fabric and k the next st, catching the strand behind it, k1, *sl 3 wyib, k1, insert needle under loose CC1 strand on front of fabric and k the next st, catching the strand behind it, k1; rep from * to last st, sl 1 wyib.

Rnd 6: With MC, *sl 1 wyib, k5; rep from * to end.

Rnd 7: With CC1, k3, *sl 1 wyib, k5, rep from * to last 3 sts, sl 1 wyib, k2.

Rnd 8: With CC1, sl 2 wyif, k3, *sl 3 wyif, k3: rep from * to last st, sl 1 wyif, sm, sl 2 sts wyif from right needle to left needle, move working yarn to back of work, place 2 slipped sts and m back onto left needle.

Rnd 9: With CC2, k2, *sl 1 wyib, k1, sl 1 wyib, k3; rep from * to last 4 sts, sl 1 wyib, k1, sl 1 wyib, k1.

Rnd 10: With CC2, knit all sts.

Rnd 11: With MC, insert needle under loose CC1 strand on front of fabric and k the next st, catching the strand behind it, k1, *sl 3 wyib, k1, insert needle under loose CC1 strand on front of fabric and k the next st, catching the strand behind it, k1; rep from * to last 4 sts, sl 3 wyib, k1.

Rnd 12: With MC, k3, *sl 1 wyib, k5; rep from * to last 3 sts, sl 1 wyib, k2.

Pattern Notes

In the colorwork pattern, some stitches are slipped with the yarn in back and some with the yarn in front.

Slip all stitches purlwise.

When picking up a strand held to the front, put this strand behind the stitch to be worked before knitting it.

Carry yarns not in use loosely up the inside of the work.

To make this hat larger or smaller, add or subtract stitches in multiples of 6.

Pattern

With MC and circular needle, CO 72 (84) sts and join to work in the round, pm for start of round.

Work Rnds 1-2 of Garter Rib Pattern 4 times or to desired length.

Begin Rnd 1 of Bare Hill Colorwork Pattern.

Work Rnds 1-12, 3 times.

Break CC1 and CC2.

With MC, knit 1 rnd. 

Crown Decreases

Switch to DPNs when needed as st counts decrease

Rnd 1: *K10, k2tog; rep from * to end. (66 (77) sts)

Rnds 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12: Knit all sts.

Rnd 3: *K9, k2tog; rep from * to end. (60 (70) sts)

Rnd 5: *K8, k2tog; rep from * to end. (54 (63) sts)

Rnd 7: *K7, k2tog; rep from * to end. (48 (56) sts)

Rnd 9: *K6, k2tog: rep from * to end. (42 (49) sts)

Rnd 11: *K5, k2tog; rep from * to end. (36 (42) sts)

Rnd 13: *K4, k2tog; rep from * to end. (30 (35) sts)

Rnd 14: *K3, k2tog; rep from * to end. (24 (28) sts)

Rnd 15: *K2, k2tog; rep from * to end. (18 (21) sts)

Do not BO.

Finishing

Break MC, leaving an 8” tail. Thread tail onto tapestry needle and run through remaining sts 2 times. Pull snug and run end to inside of hat.

Weave in all ends.

Wash and block lightly.
