Patches Make Perfect Ornaments

Bust your yarn, ribbon, and button stashes with these fun ornaments. Work in traditional Christmas colors, or work in a color scheme all your own to match your tree. These are also fun to make and hang year-round!

Materials

Yarn:

Medium Weight YarnUniversal Yarn Deluxe Worsted (100% Wool; 220 yards [200 meters]/100 grams): 14017 Blush (A), 1 hank; 12188 Heather (B), 1 hank; 12291 Petit Pink (C), 1 hank; 111835 Purple (D), 1 hank; 12171 Heliotrope (E), 1 hank.

Needles: US size 4 (3.5 mm): set of dpns

Notions: Tapestry needle; polyester stuffing; 2 colors of 1/8” ribbon; eight ½” buttons; sewing needle and thread

Star Pattern

Side (make 2)

Wedge 1

With A, CO 2 sts, leaving a 8” tail for seaming.

Increase Section

Row 1 (WS): Purl.
Row 2 (RS): Sl1, m1, sl1 – 3 sts.
Row 3: Purl.
Row 4: Sl1, m1, k1, m1, sl1 – 5 sts.
Row 5: Purl.
Row 6: Sl1, m1, k3, m1, sl1 – 7 sts.
Row 7: Purl.
Row 8: Sl1, m1, k5, m1, sl1 – 9 sts.
Row 9: Purl.
Row 10: Sl1, m1, k7, m1, sl1 – 11 sts.
Row 11: Purl.

Decrease Section

Row 1 (RS): Sl1, k2tog, k5, ssk, sl1 – 9 sts.
Row 2 (WS): Purl.
Row 3: Sl1, k7, sl1.
Row 4: Purl.
Row 5: Sl1, k2tog, k3, ssk, sl1 – 7 sts.
Row 6: Purl.
Row 7: Sl1, k5, sl1.
Row 8: Purl.
Row 9: Sl1, k2tog, k1, ssk, sl1 – 5 sts.
Row 10: Purl.
Row 11: Sl1, sl1-k2tog-psso, sl1 – 3 sts.
Row 12: Purl.
Row 13: Sl1-k2tog-psso – 1 st.

Fasten off, leaving a 8” tail for seaming.

Wedges 2-5: With B, C, D, and E, work as for Wedge 1.

Sew Wedges tog along sides, through outermost loop of each of first 5 slipped sts using cast-on tails.

Finishing

Place WS of Sides tog. Sew together along rem slipped sts about ¾ of the way around using bind-off tails. Stuff lightly. Cut a 9” piece of each color of ribbon. Holding ribbons together as one, tack inside of ornament. Finish sewing sides. Sew a button to each side of ribbon on outside, going through ribbon, further securing it. Weave in ends.

Sphere Pattern

With A, CO 23 sts.

Wedge 1

Row 1 (RS): K13, wrap next st and turn.
Row 2 (WS): P3, wrap next st and turn.
Row 3: K3, knit next st tog with wrap, k3, wrap next st and turn.
Row 4: P7, ssp next st tog with wrap, p3, wrap next st and turn.
Row 5: K11, knit next st tog with wrap, k2, wrap next st and turn.
Row 6: P14, ssp next st tog with wrap, p2, wrap next st and turn.
Row 7: K17, knit next st tog with wrap, k2 (end of row), turn.
Row 8: Sl1, k19, knit next st tog with wrap, k1, sl1 (end of row), turn.

Wedge 2

Switch to B. Work Rows 1-8 as for Wedge 1.

Wedge 3

Switch to C. Work Rows 1-8 as for Wedge 1.

Wedge 4

Switch to D. Work Rows 1-8 as for Wedge 1.

Wedge 5

Switch to E. Work Rows 1-8 as for Wedge 1.

Wedges 6-10

Rep Wedges 1-5.

BO all sts leaving a 10” tail.

Finishing

Sew cast-on and bind-off edges together ¾ of the way. Stuff Sphere. Finish seaming. With same tail, sew one end shut by working a running st along slipped sts from side of Sphere. Cut a 9” piece of each color of ribbon. Holding ribbons together as one, tack inside of ornament. Finish sewing sides. Sew a button on top and on bottom of Sphere, tucking ribbon underneath the top button, going through ribbon, further securing it. Weave in ends.

Tree Pattern

Side (make 2)

With E, CO 7 sts.

Trunk

Set-up Row (WS): Purl.

Row 1 (RS): Sl1, k5, sl1.
Row 2 (WS): Purl.
Rows 3-6: Rep Rows 1-2, 2 more times.

Switch to D.

Main Tree

Row 1: CO 8 sts, knit to end – 15 sts.
Row 2: CO 8 sts, purl to end – 23 sts.
Row 3: Sl1, k2tog, knit to last 3 sts, ssk, sl1 – 21 sts.
Row 4: Purl.
Row 5: Sl1, knit to last st, sl1.
Row 6: Purl.

Switch to C.

Rows 7-10: Rep Rows 3-6 – 19 sts.
Row 11: Sl1, k2tog, knit to last 3 sts, ssk, sl1 – 17 sts.
Row 12: Purl.  

Switch to B.

Rows 13-18: Rep Rows 11-12, 3 times – 11 sts.

Switch to A.

Rows 19-24: Rep Rows 11-12, 3 times – 5 sts.
Row 25: Sl1, sl1-k2tog-psso, sl1 – 3 sts.
Row 26: Purl.
Row 27: Sl1-k2tog, psso.

Fasten off last st.

Finishing

Holding WS of Sides together, sew together, leaving top inch unsewn. Cut a 9” piece of each color of ribbon. Holding ribbons together as one, tack inside of ornament. Finish sewing sides. Sew a button to each side of ribbon on outside, going through ribbon, further securing it. Weave in ends.

Mitered Square Pattern (make 2)

With A, CO 35 sts.

Set-up Row (WS): P1, k16, pm, p1, pm, k16, p1.

Row 1 (RS): Sl1, knit to 2 sts before m, ssk, sl m, sl1, sl m, k2tog, knit to last st, sl1 – 33 sts.
Row 2 (WS): Purl.
Row 3: Rep Row 1 – 31 sts.
Row 4: P1, knit to m, sl m, p1, sl m, knit to last st, p1.

Switch to B.

Rows 5-8: Rep Rows 1-4 – 27 sts.
Rows 9-10: Rep Rows 1-2 – 25 sts.

Switch to C.

Rows 11-12: Rep Rows 3-4 – 23 sts.
Rows 13-16: Rep Rows 1-4 – 19 sts.
Rows 17-18: Rep Rows 1-2 – 17 sts.

Switch to D.

  • In the sphere, what is “wrap next stitch”? Is this like a short row wrap and turn or is it some kind of yarnover?
