Socks to Frill

A nod to the frilly socks of our youth, these baby and toddler socks are oh so darling. The best part is that they knit up super fast and they look absolutely adorable on tiny feet.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: 1 (2, 3, 4) to fit shoe size 2.5-3.5 (4-5, 5.5-6.5, 7-8)” / [18/19 (20/21, 22/23, 24/25) shoe size EU]. Foot length measure 4.75 (5.25, 5.5, 6)” / [12 (13, 14, 15) cm].

Shown in size 2.

Gauge: 30 sts and 42 rounds = 4” [10 cm] in St st after wet blocking.

Materials

Yarn: Schachenmayr Regia 4-fädig uni (75% Wool, 25% Polyamid; 230 yards [210 meters]/ 50 grams): 2929 Lavendar (1 (1, 1, 1) ball)

Needles: US size 1 (2.25 mm) circular or DPNs plus 1 extra DPN

Notions: US size 2½ (3.0 mm) crochet hook, markers (1), tapestry needle, waste yarn for provisional cast-on

Abbreviations

DS: Double stitch

KDS: Knit the double stitch

PDS: Purl the double stitch

Special Stitches

German Short Rows

DS: Bring yarn to front, slip the first stitch as if to purl, bring yarn over the needle to the back of your work and pull tight (this creates a double stitch = DS).

KDS: When reaching the double stitches, treat them as a single stitch and knit through both legs of the DS on a RS-row.

PDS: When reaching the double stitches, treat them as a single stitch and purl through both legs of the DS on a WS-row.

Lace Pattern

Rnd 1: Knit all sts.

Rnd 2: *Yo, k1, skp, yo, dd, yo, k2tog, k1, yo, k1; rep from *.

Rep Rnds 1-2 for patt.

Pattern Notes

The socks are worked cuff down with a provisional cast-on and in pieces. The pieces are then joined after opening the provisional cast-on.

You start knitting the leg first, using a provisional cast-on. The so-called boomerang heel features German Short Rows. After finishing the toe, the frilly lace section is worked in rounds and joined to the provisional cast-on to work the cuff.

Pattern

Provisional Cast-On

With crochet hook and waste yarn, loosely ch 45 (45, 50, 50).

With working yarn and DPNs or circular needles, CO through the backside bumps of the ch 40 (40, 44, 48) sts, divide them on the DPNs, join to working in the rnd and PM if working with circular needle. Make sure not to twist the sts.

Leg

Work in St st until Leg meas 1.25 (1.25, 1.5, 1.75)” / [3.5 (3.5, 4, 4.5) cm].

Boomerang Heel

The heel is worked in rows over the sts of Needle 4 and Needle 1. If working on circular needle, the heel is worked over the first 10 (10, 11, 12) sts and the last 10 (10, 11, 12) sts of the rnd The beg of rnd lies in the middle of these sts.

Set-up for working with DPNs: With beg of next rnd, put 1 DPN aside. With Needle 4 (heel needle), k10 (10, 11, 12) sts from Needle 1. (20 (20, 22, 24) sts on heel needle)

Set-up for working with circular needle: With beg of next rnd k next 10 (10, 11, 12) sts.

German Short Rows – Part 1

Next Row (WS): DS, p19 (19, 21, 23) sts, turn work.

Next Row (RS): DS, k to DS, turn work.

Next Row (WS): DS, p to DS, turn work.

Work last 2 rows a total of 5 (5, 6, 6) times.

Work in Rounds

Note: End of rnd is in the middle of the heel needle.

Next Rnd: DS, k8 (8, 8, 10), (KDS) 6 (6, 7, 7) times, k20 (20, 22, 24), (KDS) 6 (6, 7, 7) times, k4 (4, 4, 5), end of rnd.

Knit 3 more rnds in St st.

German Short Rows – Part 2

Next Row (RS): K 5 (5, 5, 6), turn work.

Next Row (WS): DS, p 9 (9, 9, 11), turn work.

Next Row (RS): DS, k to DS, KDS, k1, turn work.

Next Row (WS): DS, p to DS, PDS, p1, turn work.

Work last 2 rows a total of 5 (5, 6, 6) times.

Foot

Note: The Foot is worked in rnds, the sts need to be divided onto 4 DPNs again.

Set-up Rnd: Needle 4: DS, k9 (9, 10, 11), end of rnd.

Needle 1: K9 (9, 10, 11), KDS

Needle 2 and 3: K20 (20, 22, 24)

Needle 4: KDS, k9 (9, 10, 11), end of rnd.

Work in rnds until Foot meas 3.75 (4.25, 4.75, 5.25)” / [9.5 (10.5, 12, 13) cm].

Toe

Next Rnd (Dec): K to last 3 sts on Needle 1, k2tog, k2, skp, k to last 3 sts on Needle 3, k2tog, k2, skp, k to end of rnd. (4 sts dec’d)

Next Rnd: K all sts.

Work last 2 rnds a total of 5 (5, 6, 6) times. (20 (20, 20, 24) sts)

Next Rnd: K to last 3 sts on Needle 1, k2tog, k2, skp, k to last 3 sts on Needle 3, k2tog, k2, skp, k to end of rnd.

Work last rnd a total of 3 (3, 3, 4) times.

Cut yarn and pull tight through rem 8 sts. Weave in end.

Frilly Lace

With working yarn and DPNs, CO 80 (80, 90, 100) sts, divide them on the DPNs, join to working in the rnd and PM. Make sure not to twist the sts.

Set-up Rnd: K all sts.

Start working the Lace Pattern starting with Rnd 1 of the chart.

Work Rnd 1 and 2 of chart a total of 5 times.

Next Rnd: Knit all sts.

Next Rnd (Dec):  – (-, k3tog, k4tog), *k2tog; rep from * until last 2 (2, 3, 4) sts, k2tog (k2tog, k3tog, k4tog). (40 (40, 44, 48) sts)

Connecting the lace section and the sock’s leg

Open the Provisional Cast-On and pick up sts onto separate DPN.

Hold DPN with lace in front of DPN with open sock sts.

Next Rnd: *K tog one lace sts with one sock st; rep from * around.

Cuff

Rnd 1: *K1tbl, p1; rep from * around.

Rep last rnd until Cuff meas 0.75” / [2 cm].

BO all sts.

Finishing

Weave in all ends. Soak socks in warm water, press gently between towels.

Block lace frills with needles and let dry completely.
