Beaded Beanie

The silk merino yarn featured in this project offers muted hints of gray, green and mauve to depict the icy winter landscape. Dress up this design with beaded tree shapes to complete the look.

Skill Level: Easy

Size: Small, (medium, large) 18.5”( 21”, 23.5”) in circumference; Shown in size medium

Gauge: 27 sts and 36 rows = 4” [10 cm] in St st after wet blocking

Materials

Yarn: Life in the Long Grass (50% superwash merino, 50% silk; 437 yards [400 meters]/100 grams): Shell (MC, 1 (1,1) skein)
Needles: US size 2 (3.0 mm) circular (16”) and double pointed needles, US size 1 (2.75 mm) circular (16”)
Notions: Markers, 1 removable marker, tapestry needle, glass seed beads (37 glass seed beads in 8 (9, 10) different colors), beading needle and thread.

Abbreviations

K-tbl: Knit through the back loop
PB: Place Bead
K2tog: knit two stitches together
M1: make one stitch by picking up bar between sts from back to front and k
SS St: Stocking stitch

Special Stitches

Twisted Rib: * K1-tbl, p1* repeat until end of round.
Place bead: Work to where bead will be placed; bring yarn to front as to purl. Slip next stitch purlwise, place bead in front of slip stitch, and bring yarn to back as to knit. This will hold the bead in place. Continue as pattern.

Pattern Notes

This pattern is worked in the round from the bottom up. The hat has a twisted rib brim, beaded trims around the main body of the hat and staggered decreases shape the crown of the hat. The hat is close fitting but if you want a more slouchy beanie style, knit the next size up!

Brim

CO 108 (124, 140) sts with smaller circular needle, using thumb cast on. Join in the round; be careful not to twist the sts.
Rnds 1-10: Work in twisted rib.

Main Body of the Hat

Rnd 11: Change to larger needle. Increase 20 sts evenly across the round. (128, (144, 160) sts)
Rnds 12-14: K7, *p1, k15;* repeat from * to * 7 (8, 9) more times, p1, k8.
Break yarn and add beads to your yarn.
Add beads in order; remember that the last beads threaded are the first ones knitted. Size small has 8 colors, medium nine and large has ten different colors beads) there are 37 beads per tree, a total of 296, (333, 370) beads.

Rnd 16 and all even rows to Row 46: Knit.

Finishing

Break thread, leaving a long tail. With a tapestry needle, pull thread through eight live stitches and tighten up. Pull thread to inside of the hat and weave in.
Weave in all threads.
Wet block hat to dimensions. yarn ball
