Elderberry Leaves Cardigan

Yarn:

Fine Weight Yarn Nazli Gelin Garden 5 (100% Egyptian Giza Mercerized Cotton; 174 yards [160 meters]/50 grams): #500-66 Medium Sage, 8 (9, 11, 12, 13, 14) balls

Needles: US size 4 (3.75 mm): two 40” circular

Notions: Tapestry needle; stitch holders; stitch markers; safety pins; two 3/8” buttons (1 decorative, 1 plain)

Pattern Notes

The cardigan body is worked from the bottom up. Fronts and Back are separated at the armholes and worked up separately. Final stitches for Fronts and Back are placed on holders to be later attached to the sides of the Sleeve Saddles.

2-st I-Cord 3-Needle Bind-off (for joining Sleeves to Body): * K1, k3tog tbl (last I-Cord st tog with 1 st from each needle), slip these 2 sts back to left front needle; rep from *.

3-St I-Cord Bind-off (For binding off top of Sleeve Saddles/Neck Edge): * K2, k2tog tbl (last I-Cord st tog with 1 picked up st), slip these 3 sts back to left needle; rep from *.

Join Body and Sleeves

Place First 2 Right Front sts onto safety pin, place rem 86 (96, 106, 116, 126, 136) Right Front sts onto needle. Knit across Right Front sts, pm, working onto same needle, pick up and knit 33 (36, 38, 40, 42, 44) sts down side of Right Armhole, 16 sts along armhole bind off, 33 (36, 38, 40, 42, 44) up the other side of Right Armhole, pm, knit across 75 (85, 95, 105, 115, 125) Back sts, pm, pick up and knit 33 (36, 38, 40, 42, 44) sts down side of Left Armhole, 16 sts along armhole bind off, 33 (36, 38, 40, 42, 44) up the other side of Left Armhole, pm, knit across 86 (96, 106, 116, 126, 136) Left Front sts, place rem 2 sts on st holder – 395 (437, 475, 513, 551, 589) sts on needle.

Slide sts to other end of needle. Break yarn, set aside.

Sew both Sleeve seams.

Pick up and knit 86 (96, 106, 116, 126, 136) sts along Left Front Saddle, pm, 82 (88, 92, 96, 100, 104) sts along bind-off edge of Left Sleeve, 75 (85, 95, 105, 115, 125) sts along Back Saddle, pm, 82 (88, 92, 96, 100, 104) sts along bind-off edge of Right Sleeve, and 86 (96, 106, 116, 126, 136) sts along Right Front Saddle – 395 (437, 475, 513, 551, 589) sts on needle. Slide sts to other end of needle. Break yarn, set aside.

Holding both needles tog with WS facing and Sleeve needle in front, CO 2 sts to front needle, bind off and join all sts from Sleeves and Body using 2-st I-Cord 3 Needle Bind-off.

BO 2 I-Cord sts, but do not break yarn.

Knit across end of 10 held Right Front Saddle sts, pm, pick up and knit 64 (70, 76, 82, 88, 94) sts along inner Right Front Saddle, 36 (36, 38, 38, 42, 42) inner Back Saddle, 64 (70, 76, 82, 88, 94) sts along inner Left Front Saddle, pm, knit across end of 10 held Left Front Saddle sts – 184 (196, 210, 222, 238, 250) sts on needle.

Break yarn.

Slide sts to other end of needle. Place 2 held Right Front sts from safety pin to left needle.

BO all sts to m using 3-st I-Cord Bind off, work 2 rows of 3-st I-Cord without joining (button loop made & corner turned), BO all sts to next m using 3-st I-Cord Bind off, work 2 rows of 3-st I-Cord without joining (button loop made & corner turned), BO rem sts except for last picked up st – 3 I-Cord sts rem + 1 picked up st.

Place last picked up st onto needle with held 2 Left Front sts. Join the 2 sets of 3 sts using Kitchener st.

Weave in ends. Sew one (decorative) button to Right Front at corner of shoulder seam. Sew the other (plain) button to inside of Left Front at corner of shoulder seam. Overlap Left Front. Button.yarn ball
