Father’s Day Finest Socks & Scarf

A knit alternative to the traditional Father’s Day tie, make dad a pair of socks and a scarf to match. These socks are designed specifically for men’s feet, features wide circumferences, a square heel and rounded toe. The easy to memorize stitch pattern has a masculine look and results in a light fabric, making it an ideal sock for warmer weather. The scarf is cozy, but lightweight, and is an easy knit that will keep him warm and stylish. The scarf is knit using a simple two-row repeat.

Materials

Yarn:

Super Fine Weight Yarn Berroco Ultra Alpaca Fine (50% wool, 20% Alpaca, 30% Nylon; 433 yards [400 meters]/100 grams): 1288 Blueberry Mix, 1 ball

Needles: US size 1 (2.25 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge in needle style for your preferred method of working small circumference in the round.

Notions: Stitch markers (2); tapestry needle

Pattern Notes

Pattern is worked in the round from the top down. Instructions are given for the smallest size with instructions for other sizes in parentheses; if there are no parentheses, the instruction applies to all sizes.

Pattern

CO 72 (78, 84) sts, pm after 36th (39th, 42nd) st to divide sts as follows: first 36 (39, 42) sts will form the front of the leg/instep of the sock and the remaining 36 (39, 42) sts will form the back of the leg, heel and sole of the sock.

Pm to mark beginning of round, join for working in the round being careful not to twist sts.

Cuff

Rnd 1: *K2, p1, rep from * to end of rnd.
Rep Rnd 1, 12 times or until work measures 1” from co edge.

Leg

Rnd 1: K all sts.
Rnd 2: *K1, p2; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rep Rnds 1 and 2 until work measures 7” from co edge, ending after 36th (39th, 42nd) st of Rnd 2.

Heel Flap

Heel flap is worked back and forth over the remaining 36 (39, 42) sts.
Row 1: Sl1, p to end of row.
Row 2: Sl1, p2, *k1, p2; rep from * to end of row.
Rep Rows 1 and 2, 18 times or until heal flap measures 3”.
Rep Row 1 once more.

Turn the Heel

Row 1: Sl 1, k23 (26, 29), ssk, turn.
Row 2: Sl1, p12 (15, 18), p2tog, turn.
Row 3: Sl1, k12, (15, 18), ssk, turn.
Work Rows 2 and 3 until all sts have been worked.

Shape Gussets

Knit across 14 (17, 20) Heel sts, pick up and knit 20 stitches along edge of Heel Flap, work across instep sts, continuing st pattern as established, sm, pick up and knit 20 stitches along edge of heel flap, knit to end of round – 90 (96, 102) total sts.
Rnd 1: Work across instep sts, continuing pattern as established, sm, k1, ssk, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1.
Rnd 2: Work across instep sts, continuing pattern as established, sm, knit all sole sts
Rep Rnds 1 and 2 until 36 (39, 42) sole sts remain.

Foot

Continue working in est st pattern on instep sts while working sole sts in stockinette stitch until Foot length measures 2” less than desired length as measured from Heel Flap.

Shape Toe

Rnd 1: K1, ssk, knit to last 3 instep sts, k2tog, k1, sm, k1, ssk, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1 – 4 sts dec’d
Rnd 2: Knit all sts.
Rep these 2 rnds 9 (10, 10) times – 36 (38, 44) sts remain.

Medium Width Only

Rnd 3: K1, ssk, knit to last 3 instep sts, k2tog, k1, sm k to end of rnd – 36 sts remain.

All Sizes
Rep Rnd 1 only 4 (4, 5) times – 20 (20, 24) sts remain.

Arrange all instep stitches on a single needle and all sole stitches on a single needle.  Use Kitchener stitch to graft sole and instep stitches together.

Finishing

Weave in ends and block.

Scarf Pattern

Size: 8.5” wide and 72” long

Gauge: 30 sts and 28 rows = 4” [10 cm] in pattern stitch after wet blocking

Yarn: Berroco Ultra Alpaca Fine (50% wool, 20% Alpaca, 30% Nylon; 433 yards [400 meters]/100 grams): 1288 Blueberry Mix, 2 balls

Needles: US size 4 (3.5 mm): straight needles

Notions: Tapestry needle

Pattern

CO 66 sts.
Row 1 (RS): K all sts.
Rows 2 (WS): *k2, p1; rep from * to end.

Rep Rows 1 and 2 until Scarf measures 72” or desired length, ending after a WS row.

BO loosely.

Finishing

Use tapestry needle to weave in ends.  Block to measurements.yarn ball
