Bright Side Tunic

The Bright Side Tunic is a fun piece to throw on in the days when some warmth is needed but a full coat is just too much. The front and back of this tunic are knit from bottom to top, separately, then joined at the shoulder using 3-needle bind off. The side edgings are added, then finally the cowl.

Tip: This is approximately 3 sts picked up over every 4 rows. If you are off by a couple of sts, don’t fret. As long as you have an odd number of sts on each side of the marked center st the pattern will work out.

Row 7: *P1, k1; rep from * across row to within 1 st of center, p3, (k1, p1) to marked st, work 2-st buttonhole as follows: wyif sl 1, return yarn to back of work, (sl 1, pass 2nd st over first st) twice, slip last st on right needle to left needle, turn, using Cable Cast-On method, CO 3 sts, turn, sl 1, pass 2nd st over first st to close buttonhole, work in pattern to next marked st, work 2-st buttonhole, work in pattern across to end of row.

Row 8: Knit across row.

Row 9: *P1, k1; rep from * across row to within 1 st of center, p3, (k1, p1) across to end of row.

Rows 10-13: Rep Rows 8-9 twice.

Bind off kwise to within 1 st of marked center st, cdd, pass 2nd st over first st, bind off rem sts kwise – 207(211, 219, 223) sts.

Left Edging

Rows 1-6: Work same as Right Edging.

Row 7: (Work in pattern to within 2 sts of marked buttonhole st, work 2-st buttonhole) twice, work in pattern across to end of row.

Complete same as Right Edging.

Cowl

With RS facing, using MC and smaller size needles, beginning at right shoulder seam, pick up 7 sts evenly spaced to back neck st holder, k16 from holder, pick up 27 sts evenly spaced across left neck edge to front holder, k16 from front holder, pick up 20 sts evenly spaced to shoulder seam, pick up 1 st in same sp as first st, turn work – 87 sts.

The cowl is worked with WS facing so that the RS of cowl will show when worn.

Rnd 1: Slip last st on right needle to left needle, pm, k2tog, p1, (k1, p1) around – 86 sts.

Rnds 2-5: *K1, p1; rep from * around.

Change to larger size needles.

Rnds 6-7: Knit around.
Rnds 8-9: With CC, knit around.
Rnds 10-11: With MC, knit around.
Rnds 12-25: Rep Rnds 8-11, 3 times, then rep Rnds 8-9 once more.

Begin Short Row Shaping

Rnd 26: With MC, k48, w&t.

P40, w&t.

With CC, k38, w&t.

P36, w&t.

With MC, k34, w&t.

P32, w&t.

With CC, k29, w&t.

P26, w&t.

With MC, k23, w&t.

P20, w&t.

With CC, k17, w&t.

P14, w&t.

With MC, knit around incorporating wraps in the st wrapped.

Rnd 27: Knit around.
Rnds 28- 29: With CC, knit around.
Rnd 30: With MC, *k1, wyib sl 1: rep from * around.
Rnd 31: *P1, k1; rep from * around.
Rnd 32: With CC, *wyib sl 1, k1; rep from * around.
Rnd 33: *K1, p1; rep from * around.
Rnds 34-37: Rept Rnds 30-33.

With CC, bind off all sts loosely kwise.

Finishing

Weave in ends. Block lightly if needed.

Mark Front edging opposite buttonholes. Place small button on WS of edging and large button on RS of edging. Sew buttons together. To fasten, slip small button through buttonhole on Back edging from RS to WS. Larger outer button is for decorative purposes only.yarn ball
