Monochromatic Checkered Muffler

An homage to the scarves popular with female pilots in the 20th century, the simple square pattern of this short muffler has an almost embossed quality to it. Worked in luscious silk-blend yarn, this is a perfect piece to wear around your neck and shoulders on late spring evenings.

Skill Level: Easy 

Size: 11” x 50” excluding fringe

Gauge: Approx.  25 sts/31 rows = 4” (10 cm)

Materials

Yarn: Lost City Knits Twin Canyon (50% merino wool, 50% silk; 500 yards [455 meters]/113 grams): Silver Bells (1 skein)
Needles: US size 3 (3.25 mm) double pointed needles (2) and 29” circular needles
Notions: US size E/ (3.5 mm) crochet hook, US size (3.0 mm) crochet hook, tapestry needle, Stitch markers, three (3) plastic needlepoint guards

Pattern Notes

When working main muffler pattern, sl the first st of every row, keeping in pattern.
A sl st crochet row is worked along each edge prior to ribbing, and sts are picked up onto needle through back loop only of crochet sts with hk.
Side rib edges are worked back and forth on a circular needle.

Pattern

Using long tail cast on, cast on 60 sts.
Rows 1-2: Sl first st knitwise, knit across.
Following Chart A below and slipping first st of each row, rep 2-block pattern over 24 sts twice, and then first 12-st block once more (total of five blocks across over 60 sts); rep rows 1-24 sixteen times. (384 rows)
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 once more. Bind off knitwise, leaving last lp on needle.

Working First Edging (RS)

Remove dp needle and insert larger hk into lp; turn work 90 degrees clockwise so long edge of muffler is now working edge, ch 1, crochet sl st into each slipped st along muffler edge and one st separating each block. (7 sts per block side (225 sts)
Do not turn work.
Remove hk from lp and insert circular needle with yarn held in back of work, *[insert hk in blo of next st to the right of needle, yo, pull up lp through stitch and place lp on knitting needle.*Rep from * across row (225 lps on knitting needle). Turn work.
Row 1: *K3, p3, rep from * across row, ending with k3 in final three sts. Turn.
Row 2: *P3, k3, rep from * across row, ending with p3 in final 3 sts. Turn.
Rep edging rows 1 and 2 alternately once more, then row 1 once more. Bind off in rib pattern.

Second Edging

With rs facing, using larger hk and working right to left, attach yarn with sl st at beg of opposite muffler side edge, ch 1, crochet sl st into each knit slipped st along muffler edge and one st separating each block – 7 sts per block side (225 sts). Do not turn work.
Work remainder of second edging as for first edging.

Finishing

Weave in ends; block muffler to dimensions.

Attaching Fringe

Cut sixty-six (66) 12” lengths of yarn and fold in half to form lp. With rs of muffler facing, insert smaller hk into corner st of either short side edge from back to front, *pull length of yarn at fold lp from front to back, remove hk and thread yarn ends through lp from front to back and pull taught, sk next st, insert hk into next st from back to front; rep from * across remainder of muffler edge as well as other muffler short edge. Fold scarf in half, lining up short edges. Trim any stray or uneven fringe ends. yarn ball
