Maritime Cardigan

This pretty top down cardigan is worked in lightweight machine washable yarn. Twisted stitches are used to create a panel of medallions on the back and at the front edges of the sweater, with stockinette stitch at the body sides and for the short sleeves. It’s the perfect cover up for summertime fun with your little one!

Work even in patterns until Body measures 5 (5.5, 6, 6.5, 7)” from underarm, ending after a WS row.

Next Row (RS): (K1, p1) twice, k1, m1p, (k1, p1) 3 times, k1, m1p, (k1, p1) twice, remove m, (k1, p1) to 1 st before back panel m, k1, remove m, p1, k1, p1, *k1, m1p, (k1, p1) 3 times; rep from * to last 4 sts of back panel, (k1, p1) twice. Work in Flat 1×1 Ribbing as they appear for 1”. Work stretchy bind off.

Sleeves

Place (28, 32, 32, 34, 34) held Sleeve sts onto double pointed needles or needles of choice for working small circumferences in the round.

Join yarn at right edge of underarm gusset. Pick up and knit 4 (4, 5, 5, 6) sts from cast on sts, pm for beginning of round, pick up and knit 4 (4, 5, 5, 6) sts from cast on sts, k to end of round –

36 (40, 42, 44, 46) sts.

Next Rnd: K3 (3, 4, 4, 5), k2tog, k to last 5 (5, 6, 6, 7) sts, ssk, k to end of round – 34 (38, 40, 42, 44) sts.

Work even in St st for 1.75”.

Work Circular 1×1 Ribbing for 0.75”.

Work stretchy bind-off.

Make second sleeve the same.

Button Band

With RS facing and beginning at Left Front neck edge, join yarn, pick up and knit about 57 (63, 67, 73, 75) sts along left front edge.

Work Flat 1×1 Ribbing for 0.75 (0.75, 0.75, 1, 1)”.

Bind off.

Place 6 markers or safety pins to indicate button placement (reserving 1 button for collar).

Buttonhole Band

With RS facing and beginning at Right Front hem edge, join yarn, pick up and knit 57 (63, 67, 73, 75) sts along left front edge to match buttonband.

Work Flat 1×1 Ribbing for 3 rows.

Next Row (RS): Work in pattern, working 3-st One Row Buttonholes opposite markers.

Work Flat 1×1 Ribbing until buttonhole band measures 0.75 (0.75, 0.75, 1, 1)”.

Collar

With RS facing, join yarn at edge of Right Front buttonhole band. Pick up and knit around neck, at a rate of 1 st for each st and 2 sts for every 3 rows. Total should be an odd number of sts.

Next Row (WS): *P1, k1; rep from * to last st, p1.

Next 2 Rows: Work sts as they appear.

Next Row (RS): K1, p1, k1, work 3-st One Row Buttonhole, work sts as they appear to end.

Continue working in pattern as set until Collar measures 0.75 (0.75, 0.75, 1, 1)” from pickup row.

Bind off all sts.

Finishing

Weave in ends. Block to measurements. Sew buttons opposite buttonholes.yarn ball
