Sorrel Tartan Cardigan

Sorrel features two different tartan patterns in warm earthy tones which blend together to create this stunning cardigan. The pattern of the left front and sleeve is actually a stripe pattern, which is then embroidered with vertical lines to mimic tartan. The pattern of the right front and sleeve is worked in stranded colorwork. The back is in solid
color in stockinette stitch. The comfortable cardigan has a relaxed shape and modified drop shoulder sleeves, button bands and a collar, which are worked in single ribbing. The back and fronts are worked flat from the bottom up and sewn together. We promise that you’ll adore this striking piece!

Special Stitches

Stranded Color-work pattern

Work according to Chart A. Work as many repeats as possible across the stitches in the chosen size. The chart is worked using the stranded method. Always pick up the background color over the pattern color and pick up the pattern color from under the background color. Keep floats loose. Always repeat rows 1-20 to the desired length.

Stripe pattern

Work in St st: *6 rows with MC, 2 rows with CC2, 2 rows with MC, 2 rows with CC2, 6 rows with MC, 2 rows with CC1; rep from * to length mentioned in pattern. (20 rows rep)

Double Selvage stitch (DS)

Row 1 (RS): Sl 1 wyib, k1; work in given stitch pattern to last 2 sts; sl 1 wyib, p1.

Row 2 (WS): Sl 1 wyib, p1; work in given stitch pattern to last 2 sts; sl 1 wyif, p1.

Repeat these 2 rows.

When working the double selvedge st, after slipping the first st, pull the yarn as tight as possible before knitting or purling the next st.

Horizontal one-row buttonhole

With RS facing, work in rib patt, ending with a purl st (yarn is in front). Sl the next st, bring yarn back and BO the sl st by lifting it up and over the 2nd st and off the needle. BO 5 more sts the same way (6 sts bound off). Sl the first st on RH needle back to LH needle. Turn the work so that the WS is facing, pick up the yarn and pull on it to prevent a gap from forming at the beg edge of the button hole, insert the RH needle bet the first 2 sts on the LH needle, then use the cable method to CO 7 sts, bringing the yarn to the front bet the needles before placing the 6th st on the LH needle. Turn the work so the RS is facing and sl first st on the LH needle Kwise onto the RH needle, then lift the last CO st over the sl st and off the needle. Return the last (sl) st back onto the LH needle (1 buttonhole completed) and work in rib with the rem sts.

Sloped BO

To prevent “stair steps” from forming between subsequent BO rows, use the sloped BO method as following: On the first BO row, bind off as usual to define the initial part of the slope. Work the next row to the last st, but do not work the last st. Turn work so that the unworked st becomes the first st on the RH needle. Sl the first st on the LH needle Pwise, then BO the unworked st by lifting it over the sl st and off the needle.

Pattern notes

The garment is knitted bottom-up in pieces and then sewn together. Sts are picked up along the front opening and the button band and buttonhole band is worked in single ribbing.

After the shoulders are sewn, sts are picked up along neck edge and the collar is worked in single ribbing.
