Ostrich Plumes Cropped Cardi

This beautiful raglan cardigan is worked from the top down and features a lacy Ostrich Plumes stitch pattern. Dazzling gold buttons line the front of this sweater that dresses up any simple tank and tee outfit.

Gauge: 24 sts by 34 rows = 4” [10 cm] in St st after wet blocking

Materials

Yarn: Red Heart Miami (100% cotton, 131 yards [120 meters]/50 grams): #134 Purple (6 (7, 9, 11, 13) balls)
Needles: US size 3 (3.25 mm) straight needles, US size 4 (3.5 mm) circular 29″ needles
Notions: Eight ½ ” gold buttons, tapestry needle, sewing needle and matching thread, stitch holders, stitch markers

Special Stitches

S2kp2: Sl2 as if to k2tog, k1, pass the 2 slipped sts over the knit stitch. 

Ostrich Plumes – Multiple of 16 sts + 1

Row 1 and all odd numbered rows: Purl.
Rows 2, 6, 10, 14, 18, 22, 26, 30: Knit.
Rows 4, 8, 12, 16: (K1, yo) 3 times, * (ssk) twice, s2kp2, (k2tog) twice, (yo, k1) 5 times, yo; repeat from * to last 14 sts, end with (ssk) twice, s2kp2, (k2tog) twice, (yo, k1) 3 times.
Rows 20, 24, 28, 32: (K2tog) 3 times, * (yo, k1) 5 times, yo, (ssk) twice, s2kp2, (k2tog) twice; repeat from * to last 11 sts, end with (yo, k1) 5 times, yo, (ssk) 3 times.
Repeat rows 1-32 for pattern.

Pattern Notes

This cardigan is worked from top down with raglan sleeves.

Pattern

Yoke

With smaller needles co 107 (107, 117, 117, 127) sts.
Work 10 rows of k1, p1 ribbing.
Switch to larger needles and work as follows:
Row 1 (WS): P23 (23, 25, 25, 27), PM, p1, PM, p5 (5, 7, 7, 9), PM, p1, PM, p47 (47, 49, 49, 51) PM, p1, PM, p5 (5, 7, 7, 9), PM, p1, PM, p23 (23, 25, 25, 27). (107 (107, 117, 117, 127) sts)
Row 2: (Knit to marker, yo, SM, k1, SM, yo) 4 times, knit to end of row. (115 (115, 125, 125, 135) sts)
Row 3: Purl.
Repeat rows 2-3 until you have 347 (363, 373, 437, 447) sts as follows:
53 (55, 57, 65, 67) sts front, 1 seam st, 65 (69, 71, 87, 89) sts sleeve, 1 seam st, 107 (111, 113, 129, 131) sts for the back, 1 seam st, 65 (69, 71, 87, 89) sts sleeve, 1 seam st, 53 (55, 57, 65, 67) sts front.
Place both seam sts and sleeve sts on waste yarn. So there will be 67 (71, 73, 89, 91) sts for each sleeve.
Knit first 53 (55, 57, 65, 67) sts, cast on 7 (15, 15, 15, 15) sts for underarm, k107 (111, 113, 129, 131), cast on 7 (15, 15, 15) sts for the next underarm, k53 (55, 57, 65, 67). (227 (251, 257, 289, 295) sts)
Knit one row increasing evenly across row 0 (8, 18, 2, 12) sts. (227 (259, 275, 291, 307) sts)
Switch to working as Ostrich Plume pattern between the first and last sts. Work even until piece measures 19 (20, 20, 21, 21)”. Work 6 rows of garter stitch. BO all sts loosely.

Sleeve

Move all sts for the sleeve onto the needle. Cast on 4, (8, 8, 8, 8, 8) sts at the beginning of row, knit all sts from sleeve, then cast on 4, (8, 8, 8, 8, 8) sts at the end of row. (75 (87, 89, 105, 107) sts for each sleeve)
K5 (3, 4, 4, 5), PM, k65 (81, 81, 97, 97) sts, PM, k5 (3, 4, 4, 5), decreasing 1 st on both sides every 6 rows 4 (6, 7, 8, 8) times. (67 (75, 75, 89, 91) sts)
After working 1” of st st, work as Ostrich Plumes pattern between markers, twice while decreasing as above.
Work 6 rows of garter stitch. BO all sts loosely.

Finishing – Button Band

With smaller needles pick up and knit 81 (84, 84, 88, 88) sts along the edge of left front. Work 10 rows of Garter stitch. BO all sts loosely.

Buttonhole Band

With smaller needles pick up and knit 81 (84, 84, 88, 88) sts. Work garter stitch for 5 rows.
Buttonhole row: K2, (yo, k2tog, k3) 8 times, knit to end of row.
Work 4 more rows of garter stitch. BO all sts loosely.
Weave in all ends.
Block the cardigan to size.
