Vivid Tulip Socks

This toe-up sock pattern is an advanced pattern that provides the knitter with the opportunity to try on the socks as they are knit. The pattern can be worked right after the toes are knit and continue to the cuffs.

Skill Level: Advanced

Size: One size; Shown in size 8 feet

Gauge: 36 sts and 40 rows = 4″ (10 cm) in Stockinette stitch with size 3 needles or size to obtain gauge

Materials

Yarn: Zitron Trekking (XXL) (75% superwash wool, 25% nylon; 459 yards [420 meters]/100 grams): #145 (1 ball)
Needles: US size 3 (3.25 mm) 16” circular needles

Abbreviations

Sl1wyib: Slip 1 with yarn in back
M1: Knit in front and back of the same stitch
M1k: Make one by working as follows: knit in the front of the next st then purl in the back of the same st.
M1p: Make one by working as follows: purl in the front of the next st then knit in the back of the same st.

Special Stitches

Japanese Short Rows
Sl1 as if to purl, purl to the last stitch, place a safety pin on the yarn. Turn.
Sl1 as if to purl, knit to last stitch; place a safety pin on the yarn. Turn.
Sl1 as if to purl, purl to the stitch that has the safety pin on it, place a safety pin on the yarn. Turn.
Sl1 as if to purl, knit to the stitch that has the safety pin on it, place a safety pin on the yarn. Turn.
Repeat steps 3-4 until you have the required number of stitches between the pins.

To Take Out the Pins
Purl all stitches until you reach the first pin. Slip the next stitch from left-hand needle onto the right-hand needle. Place the piece of yarn with the pin on it onto the left-hand needle. Slip the stitch that was previously slipped onto right-hand needle, back to left-hand needle. Remove the pin. Purl these two stitches together. Turn.
Knit until you reach the stitch with the first pin. Slip the yarn with the pin on it onto the left-hand needle. Remove the pin. Knit the next stitch on Left-hand needle with the slipped yarn together. Turn.
Repeat until all pins are taken out.

Pattern Notes

The socks are worked on 2 circular needs from toes up. You can use Judy Becker’s magic cast-on and the Japanese short rows technique to work these socks.

Pattern

Toe

Cast on 12 sts on each needle. (24 sts total)
Starting with N1, work as follows on each needle,
Rnd 1: Knit around.
Rnd 2: * K1, M1, knit to last stitch, M1, k1; repeat from * on N2. (28 sts)
Repeat rnds 1-2 until you have 28 sts on each needle. (56 sts total) 

Foot

Rnd 1: N1: P2, k2, (p2, k7) twice, p2, k2, p2; N2: Knit.
Rnd 2: N1: P2, k2, (p2, k2, sl1wyib, k1, sl1wyib, k2) twice, p2, k2, p2.; N2: Knit.
Rnd 3: Repeat rnd 2.
Rnd 4: N1: P2, k2, (p2, sl2wyib, drop the slipped st to front, slip the same 2 sts back on left-hand needle, pick up the dropped st, k3, drop the slipped st to front, k2, pick up the dropped st, k1) twice, p2, k2, p2. N2: Knit.
Repeat rnd 1-4 until piece is measured 2″ (5 cm) from back of the heel. End with rnd 4. (12 times) 

Short Row Heels

Note: Work back and forth only on sts placed on N2.
Row 1: Sl1 as if to purl, purl to the last st, place a safety pin on the yarn. Turn.
Row 2: Sl1 as if to purl, knit to last stitch; place a safety pin on the yarn. Turn.
Row 3: Sl1 as if to purl, purl to the st that has the safety pin on it, place a safety pin on the yarn. Turn.
Row 4: Sl1 as if to purl, knit to the st that has the safety pin on it, place a safety pin on the yarn. Turn.
Repeat rows 3-4 until you have 7 safety pins on each side and 14 sts in between the pins.
Work the sts taking out the pins one by one.

Cuff

Start working in the round.
The number of sts are increased to 60 and the cuff is worked as follows:
Rnd 1: [M1k, p1, k2, p2, (k7, p2) twice, k2, p1, m1p], repeat between [] on N2.
Rnd 2, 3: [K1, p2, k2, (p2, k2, sl1, k1, sl1, k2) twice, p2, k2, p2, k1], repeat between [] on N2.
Rnd 4: [K1, p2, k2, (p2, sl2wyib, drop the slipped st to front, slip the same 2 sts back on left-hand needle, pick up the dropped st, k3, drop the slipped st to front, k2, pick up the dropped st, k1) twice, p2, k2, p2, k1], repeat between [] on N2.
Repeat rnds 1-4 for 6″ (15 cm). Switch to k1, p1 ribbing for 1½” (4 cm).
Bind off all sts as follows:
* K1, knit in the same st, bind off in pattern on next 3 sts; repeat from * to end. Fasten off. yarn ball
