Gauge: Before blocking: 21 stitches and 34 rows = 4 inches in garter stitch; After blocking: 19 stitches and 32 rows = 4 inches in garter stitch.
Yarn: Knit Picks Comfy Sport (75% pima cotton, 25% acrylic; 136 yards [124 meters]/50 grams): Zinnia (C1, 1 ball), Lilac Mist (C2, 1 ball), Carrot (C3, 1 ball), Peapod (C4, 1 ball)
Needles: US size 4 (3.5 mm) straight needles
Notions: US size B/1 (2.25 mm) crochet hook, row counter, scissors, yarn needle
Except for the first square’s CO, all COs should be worked as the backward loop method (the thumb method). All slipped sts should be slipped as if to purl.
Garter stitch with selvedge: Sl1, knit to last st, ktbl.
With C1, CO 21 sts using the long-tail cast on method. Work 32 rows in garter stitch with selvedge. Break C1.
*With C2, work 8 rows in garter stitch with selvedge.
Row 9: Sl1, k4, BO 11, k4, ktbl.
Row 10: Sl1, k3, ktbl. Attach a new strand of C2, k4, k1tbl.
Rows 11-25: Work in garter stitch with selvedge for both sides, using the separate strands for each.
Row 26: Sl1, k4, CO 11, k4, k1tbl.
Rows 27-33: Work in garter stitch with selvedge. Break C2.
With C3, work 32 rows in garter stitch with selvedge. Break C3.
Work as for Square 1 using C4.
With C1, work 32 rows in garter stitch with selvedge. Break C1.**
Repeat from * to ** 3 times more; 17 squares total. Block before adding the border.
Using the crochet hook, join C1 with a slip stitch to the top right corner with the right side facing. Ch 1. Work 2 sc into each corner and 1 sc into each stitch along all four sides of the scarf. When you reach the beginning, work 1 sc into the corner, then join with a slst. Break yarn.
Weave in all ends. Block once more, if desired.
