Modern Sophisticated Glovelettes

These intermediate-level elegant glovelettes combine an I-cord band for a classy look that’s too pretty not to knit. Enjoy whipping up this pattern for all your girlfriends!

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: 7″ (18 cm) circumference (at palm, not including thumb)

Gauge: 32 sts = 4″ (10 cm); 40 rows = 4″ (10 cm) in Stockinette st

Materials

Yarn: Aunt Lydia’s Fashion Crochet Size (100% mercerized cotton; 150 yards [137 meters]/50 grams): #926 Bridal White (1 ball)
Needles: US size 1 (2.25 mm) straight needles and a set of 4 double-pointed needles
Notions: US size 1 (2.75 mm) steel crochet hook, stitch holder, two 10 mm pearl buttons, sewing needle and thread, yarn needle

Special Stitches

kfb (Knit into front and back): Knit next st but do not remove from needle, knit into back loop of same st and remove from needle.
Ssk: Slip next 2 stitches, one at a time as if to knit, to right needle, insert point of left needle through front of sts, knit these sts together through back loop.

Pattern Notes

Each glovelette begins with an I-cord band. Stitches are picked up across the length of the I-cord to begin wrist of glovelette.
Wrist is worked back and forth in rows. Side edges are shaped to form opening.

Pattern

Right Glovelette – I-Cord Band

With double pointed needles, cast on 3 sts.
Work I-cord as follows: *knit all the sts, do not turn work. Slide all the stitches to opposite end of needle. Carry yarn tightly across back of work, and knit all the stitches; repeat from * for a total of 50 rounds. Do not bind off.

Wrist

Change to straight needles.
Set-Up Row (Right Side): Pick up and knit 50 sts evenly spaced (one st per row) across length of I-cord.
Row 1 (Wrong Side): Purl.
Row 2: K1, ssk, knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. (48 sts)
Rows 3-10: Repeat last 2 rows 4 more times. (40 sts)
Row 11: Repeat Row 1.

Shape Thumb Gusset

Row 12: K9, [kfb] twice, knit to end of row. (42 sts)
Row 13: Purl.
Row 14: K1, kfb, k7, kfb, k2, kfb, knit to last 2 sts, kfb, k1. (46 sts)
Row 15: Purl.
Row 16: K1, kfb, k8, kfb, k4, kfb, knit to last 2 sts, kfb, k1. (50 sts)
Row 17: Purl, cast on 5 sts (for top of opening). (55 sts)

Hand

Work next row with double pointed needles, distributing the stitches onto 3 needles as instructed.
Row 18: With needle 1 K16, kfb, k6, kfb; with needle 2 k16; with needle 3 k15. Prepare to work in rounds. (57 sts)
Rnd 19: Knit.
Rnd 20: With needle 1 K16, kfb, k8, kfb; with needle 2 k16; with needle 3 k15. (59 sts)
Rnd 21: Knit.
Rnd 22: With needle 1 K16, kfb, k10, kfb; with needle 2 k16; with needle 3 k15. (61 sts)
Rnd 23: Knit.
Rnd 24: With needle 1 K16, kfb, k12, kfb; with needle 2 k16; with needle 3 k15. (63 sts)
Rnd 25: Knit.
Rnd 26: With needle 1 K16, kfb, k14, kfb; with needle 2 k16; with needle 3 k15. (65 sts)
Rnd 27: Knit.
Rnd 28: With needle 1 K16, kfb, k16, kfb; with needle 2 k16; with needle 3 knit all sts. (67 sts)
Rnd 29: Knit.
Rnd 30: With needle 1 K16, kfb, k18, kfb; with needle 2 k16; with needle 3 k15. (69 sts)
Rnd 31: Knit.
Rnd 32: With needle 1 K16, kfb, k20, kfb; with needle 2 k16; with needle 3 k15. (71 sts)
Rnd 33: Knit.
Rnd 34: With needle 1 K16, kfb, k22, kfb; with needle 2 k16; with needle 3 k15. (73 sts)
Rnd 35: Knit.
Rnd 36: With needle 1 K16, kfb, k24, kfb; with needle 2 k16; with needle 3 k15. (75 sts)
Rnd 37: Knit.
Rnd 38: With needle 1 K18, slip next 24 sts to a holder for thumb, k2; with needle 2 k16; with needle 3 k15. (51 sts)

Upper Hand

Rnd 39: With needle 1 K18; with needle 2 k15, k2tog last st of needle 2 and first st of needle 3; with needle 3 knit to end of round. (50 sts)
Stitches are redistributed on the needles while working next round.
Rnd 40: With needle 1 K16; with needle 2 k16; with needle 3 k18.
Rnds 41-45: Knit.
Rnd 46: Purl.
Rnd 47: *Yarn over, ssk; repeat from * around.
Rnd 48: Purl.
Rnds 49-56: Repeat Rounds 41-48.
Rnd 57: Knit.
Rnd 58: Purl.
Rnds 59-60: Repeat last 2 rounds.
Rnd 61: Knit.
Bind off.

Thumb

Set-Up Round: With right side facing, pick up and knit 2 sts in gap between thumb and hand, Arrange the 2 picked up sts and  24 thumb sts from holder onto 3 double pointed needles, as follows: Place 8 sts each on needle 1 and needle 2, and 10 sts on needle 3. (26 sts)
Rnds 1–5: Knit.
Rnd 6: [P4, p2tog, p5, p2tog] twice. (22 sts)
Rnd 7: Knit.
Rnd 8: Purl.
Rnd 9: Knit.
Bind off.

Left Glovelette

Work same as right glovelette to thumb gusset shaping. 

Shape Thumb Gusset

Row 12: K29, [kfb] twice, knit to end of row. (42 sts)
Row 13: Purl.
Row 14: K1, kfb, k27, kfb, k2, kfb, knit to last 2 sts, kfb, k1. (46 sts)
Row 15: Purl.
Row 16: K1, kfb, k28, kfb, k4, kfb, knit to last 2 sts, kfb, k1. (50 sts)
Row 17: Purl, cast on 5 sts (for top of opening). (55 sts)

Hand

Work next row with double pointed needles, distributing the stitches onto 3 needles as instructed.
Row 18: With needle 1 K18; with needle 2 k18; with needle 3 kfb, k6, kfb, k11—57 sts. Prepare to work in rounds.
Rnd 19: Knit.
Rnd 20: With needle 1 K18; with needle 2 k18; with needle 3 kfb, k8, kfb, k11. (59 sts)
Rnd 21: Knit.
Rnd 20: With needle 1 K18; with needle 2 k18; with needle 3 kfb, k10, kfb, k11. (61 sts)
Rnd 23: Knit.
Rnd 24: With needle 1 K18; with needle 2 k18; with needle 3 kfb, k12, kfb, k11. (63 sts)
Rnd 25: Knit.
Rnd 26: With needle 1 K18; with needle 2 k18; with needle 3 kfb, k14, kfb, k11. (65 sts)
Rnd 27: Knit.
Rnd 28: With needle 1 K18; with needle 2 k18; with needle 3 kfb, k16, kfb, k11. (67 sts)
Rnd 29: Knit.
Rnd 30: With needle 1 K18; with needle 2 k18; with needle 3 kfb, k18, kfb, k11. (69 sts)
Rnd 31: Knit.
Rnd 32: With needle 1 K18; with needle 2 k18; with needle 3 kfb, k20, kfb, k11. (71 sts)
Rnd 33: Knit.
Rnd 34: With needle 1 K18; with needle 2 k18; with needle 3 kfb, k22, kfb, k11. (73 sts)
Rnd 35: Knit.
Rnd 36: With needle 1 K18; with needle 2 k18; with needle 3 kfb, k24, kfb, k11. (75 sts)
Rnd 37: Knit.
Rnd 38: With needle 1 K18; with needle 2 k18; with needle 3 K2, slip next 24 sts to a holder for thumb, knit to end of round. (51 sts)

Upper Hand

Rnd 39: With needle 1 K18; with needle 2 k17, k2tog last st of needle 2 and first st of needle 3; with needle 3, knit to end of round. (50 sts)
Stitches are redistributed on the needles while working next round.
Rnds 40–61: Work same as Rnds 40–61 of right glovelettee.
Bind off.

Thumb

Work thumb same as thumb of right glovelette.

Finishing

Right Glovelette Button Loop
With right side of right glovelette facing and crochet hook, draw up a loop in the edge of the I-cord band, ch 5, single crochet evenly around wrist opening. Fasten off.

Left Glovelette Button Loop
With right side of left glovelette facing and crochet hook, draw up a loop in the edge of the I-cord band, single crochet evenly around wrist opening, ch 5, sc in edge of I-cord.
Sew buttons opposite button loops. Weave in ends.
