Woven Cobalt Cardi

This pattern has a beautiful balance of texture, a basketweave pattern on the body and stockinette stitch at the hems, waistline and sleeves. Featuring a button closure and a deep v-neck, this cardigan is perfect to throw over any outfit to add instant warmth this fall.

Materials

Yarn:

Medium weight yarn Green Mountain Spinnery Weekend Wool (100% wool; 140 yards [128 meters]/60 grams): #7765 Deep Lake (9 (10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15) hanks)
Needles: US size 6 (4.0 mm) 32″ circular and set of 4 or 5 double-pointed needles, US size 7 (4.5 mm) 32″ and 40″ circular and set of 4 or 5 double pointed needles, US size 9 (5.5 mm) 32″ circular needles
Notions: Markers, stitch holders or waste yarn, waste yarn and size H/8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook for provisional cast on, tapestry needle, two 1″ / 2.5 cm buttons

Abbreviations

RLI (Right Lifted Increase): Use RH needle to pick up the st below the next st on the LH needle, then knit into it (1 st increased)
LLI (Left Lifted Increase): Use LH needle to pick up the st 2 sts below the last st on the RH needle, then knit into it (1 st increased)

Special Stitches

Provisional Cast-on Method: With waste yarn, beg with slipknot on crochet hook. *Wrap yarn around knitting needle counter-clockwise, then use crochet hook to draw yarn through loop on hook; rep from * for desired number of sts. Fasten off.

Basketweave Pattern (multiple of 4 sts)

(Note: The first row of this pattern is a WS row.)
Rows 1 and 3 (WS): K3, *p2, k2; repeat from * to last st, k1.
Row 2: P3, *k2, p2; repeat from * to last st, p1.
Row 4 (RS): K3, *p2, k2; repeat from * to last st, k1.
Row 5: P3, *k2, p2; repeat from * to last st, p1.
Row 6: Repeat row 4.
Repeat Rows 1-6 for pattern.

3-Stitch One-Row Buttonhole

With RS facing, bring yarn to front, sl 1 st purlwise, return yarn to the back, *sl 1 st purlwise, pass the first slipped st over the second slipped st as if to BO; rep from * 2 more times. Slip the st on the right-hand needle back to the left-hand needle and turn so WS is facing. **With yarn in back, insert right hand needle between the first 2 sts on the left-hand needle, draw through a loop and place it on the left-hand needle; rep from ** 3 more times then turn so RS is facing. With yarn in back, sl 1 st from left-hand needle to right-hand needle and pass the last CO st over that st to close the buttonhole.

Wrap and Turn

Knit row: Wyib, slip next st purlwise onto RH needle, bring yarn to front of work, return slipped st to LH needle, bring yarn to back of work, then turn work.
Purl row: Wyif slip next st purlwise onto RH needle, bring yarn to back of work, return slipped st to LH needle, bring yarn to front of work, then turn work.

Hide Wraps

Knit row: Pick up the wrap from the front with the RH needle and knit together with the st it wraps.
Purl row: Pick up the wrap through back of loop with RH needle and purl together with the st it wraps.
Three Needle Bind Off Method: Slip the sts from holders onto each of 2 needles; with the RS of garment pcs together (to form ridge on inside of garment), hold the needles parallel. With a third needle knit the first st of front and back needles together, *knit next st from each needle together, (2 sts on RH needle), BO 1 st; rep from * until all sts are BO.

Pattern Notes

The body is worked as one piece from the bottom up, divided at the underarms for back and front, then the shoulders are joined with a three-needle BO. Sleeve sts are picked up around the armholes and knit down to the cuff, working some short-rows to shape the sleeve cap.
Circular needle is suggested on the body to accommodate large number of sts. Do not join; work back and forth in rows.

Pattern

Body – Hem

With smallest (US size 6) circular needle, use a provisional method to CO 128 (144, 160, 176, 192, 208, 224) sts. Do not join; work back and forth in rows.
Beg with a RS row, work in St st until piece meas 2½” / 6.5 cm from beg, ending after a RS row.
Turning Row (WS): Knit.
Change to medium (US 7) circular needle and cont working in St st until piece meas 2½” / 6.5 cm from turning row, ending after a WS row.
Joining Row (RS): Carefully remove waste yarn from provisional CO and place 128 (144, 160, 176, 192, 208, 224) sts onto smaller circular needle. Holding the 2 circular needles parallel with the provisional sts in the back, k2tog (1 st from each needle) across joining the sts from both needles together. (128 (144, 160, 176, 192, 208, 224) sts)
Knit 2 rows, ending after a RS row.
Change to largest (US 9) circular needle.

Make second sleeve the same as the first.

Finishing

Block piece to measurements.
With 40″ / 100 cm circular needle and RS facing, beg at lower edge of right front, pick up and knit (through both layers of hem), 3 sts for every 4 rows evenly along the right front edge to the shoulder and down the back neck, then 1 st in each BO st of the back neck, then 3 sts for every 4 rows evenly along the left edge.
BO all sts knitwise with WS facing.
Sew buttons opposite buttonholes. Weave in ends. yarn ball
