Oceanic Socks

The calm of the ocean waves need never be far away with these stranded colorwork socks in marine tones. Inspired by a love of the sea they will keep your toes extra cozy on those long walks along the beach.

Skill Level: Intermediate 

Size: Cuff to heel: 9” [23cm]; Foot circumference: 8¼” [21cm]; Foot length: 9½” [24cm]

Gauge: 30 sts and 36 rows = 4” [10cm] in St st after blocking; 36 sts and 36 rows = 4” [10cm] in colorwork after blocking

Materials

Yarn: Cascade Heritage Sock Yarn (75% superwash merino, 25% nylon; 437 yards [400 meters/100 grams): #5604 Denim (MC, 1 hank), #5612 Moss (CC, 1 hank)
Needles: US size 3 (3.25 mm) double pointed needles
Notions: Stitch markers

Abbreviations

W & t (wrap and turn): Bring yarn to front of work on  knit row back on a purl row slip next st purlwise, return yarn to original position, slip next st back to left ndl, turn work.

Pattern Notes

These socks are worked in the round from the cuff down.
A ribbed cuff is followed by colorwork waves and hearts.
A short row heel is worked while the colorwork continues along the front of the sock.
A wedge toe is then grafted using Kitchener stitch.

Short Row Heel First Half

Work heel in MC only.
Row 1: K31, w & t.
Row 2: P30, w & t.
Row 3: K29, w & t.
Row 4: P28, w & t.
Continue working in rows working one stitch less each time until there are 10 wrapped stitches at each side and 12 unwrapped sts in the middle.

Short Row Heel Second Half

Row 1: K10, k wrap and st tog, w & t.
Row 2: P11, p wrap and st tog, w & t.
Row 3: K12, k both wraps and st tog, w & t.
Row 4: P13, p both wraps and st tog, w & t.
Continue working in rows working one more stitch each time until all wrapped stitches have been picked up.
Set up for foot: K all heel stitches, pick up and k 1 st between heel and instep to prevent a hole forming, rejoin CC and work instep sts in colours as seen pick up and k 1 st between instep and heel, *k3 CC, k3 MC; rep from * once more, k3 CC, k1 MC, pm to mark beginning of rnd.

Foot

Work from written instructions as for leg. Remember to k2tog where sts were picked up on previous rnd.
Break CC and k 1 rnd in MC.

Toe

Rnd 1: K13, k2tog, k1, pm, k1, ssk, k26, k2tog, k1, pm, k1, ssk, k13. (60 sts)
Rnd 2: K.
Rnd 3: *K to 3 sts before marker, k2tog, k2, ssk, rep from * k to end. (56 sts)
Rep rnds 2 and 3 four times more, then rnd 3 only four times more. (24 sts)
K7sts rearrange sts onto two needles, graft using Kitchener st. yarn ball
