Special Stitches

FlowerBud (multiple of 14 stitches)

When working the pattern in the round or on dpns, two stitches need to be offset between the first half and the second half of the pattern. See Pattern Notes for more information

Prepare for using contrast colors by cutting 20-24” lengths prior to the first row using contrast colors.

CCs 1-5 create the flower buds. Work in the following order:

1st sequence row 6 and 15: (CC1, CC2, CC3, CC4, CC5) twice.

2nd sequence row 6 and 15: (CC5, CC1, CC2, CC3, CC4)

Rnd 1: *K4, M4, K9, rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 2: *K4, (K the five sts made wrapping the yarn twice), K9, rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 3: *LS1, K5, rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 4: *K4, sl3wyib, K9, rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 18: *K9, with CC, CCD, with MC, K4, rep from * to end of rnd. Before working the last two stitches, slip them to the next needle so that the beginning of round stitches are aligned as they were at the beginning of the pattern.

Pattern Notes

Hat is worked in the round from the bottom up. Begin with the magic loop method. (video link) Switch to dpns if desired when stitches are reduced.

Slip to previous needle means slip the stitch to the right-hand needle if you are right-handed. This instruction moves the beginning of the round by the number of stitches slipped. Likewise, slip to the next needle means slipping the stitches to the left-hand needle for left-handed knitters and moves the beginning of the round by the number of stitches listed.

Stitch counts increase and decrease frequently. Some tips to help with stitch count:

LS1 is worked over 8 pattern plus 5 elongated stitches and decreases two elongated stitches.

LS2 is worked over 6 pattern plus 3 elongated stitches and decreases two elongated stitches. The stitch count is returned to the nominal 14 sts per repeat after LS2 is worked.

Pattern

With smaller needle and MC, CO 140 sts, join into a round being careful not to twist. Work in [K1, P1] ribbing for 1.25”. Switch to larger needle, P 1 rnd. K 1 rnd.

Work rnds 1-18 of the FlowerBud pattern twice, then rnds 1-5 once more.

Decrease rnds

Rnd 1: *With MC, K2, ssk, with CC M4, with MC k2tog, K11, with CC M4 with MC K9, rep from * to end of rnd. (130 sts if CC bobbles are counted as one stitch)

Rnd 4: With MC, *K3, CDD, K9, rep from * to end of rnd. (120 sts)

Note: The flowers will decrease from 10 buds to 5 buds.

Rnd 6: *K9, K5, wrapping each stitch twice, K12, rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 24: *K2tog 10 times. (10 sts)

Rnd 25: K

Rnd 26: *K2tog 5 times. (5 sts)

At this point you can break the yarn and pull the tail through the remaining 5 stitches to finish the hat.

To make an I-cord topknot, pass the 5 remaining sts to a dpn. The knit side should be facing you and the yarn end on the left. *Knit the first stitch, and give the yarn a yank (not too hard, this felted yarn breaks easily) then knit the next 4 sts. Slide 5 sts to other side of the needle and rep from * until the I-cord is about 5” long. Pass the yarn through the five sts and break. Tie the I-cord into an overhand or figure 8 knot.

Finishing

Work in ends and block if desired.
