Basketwoven Crescent Shawl

This pretty lace shawl is knit from the top down and combines texture and lace to create a basketweave stitch in the body and an open work border. An easy pattern, this is a great introduction to both techniques.

Skill Level: Easy

Size: Wingspan = 60″; Depth = 25″ 

Gauge: 20 sts and 24 rows = 4” [10 cm] in St st after wet blocking

Materials

Yarn:

  Fine Weight YarnNako Serin (50% microfiber, 50% viloft; 328 yards [300 meters]/100 grams): Orange (2 balls)
Needles: US size 6 (4.0 mm) 24” circular needles

Abbreviations

K2tog: Knit two stitches together
K2togtbl: Knit two stitches together through back loop
Kyok: K1, yo, k1 into one stitch
Sk2p: Slip one stitch, knit next two stitches together and pass slipped stitch over

Row 1 (RS): K2, yo, *k3, p3; rep from * to last 5 sts, k3, yo, k2.
Row 2 (WS): K2, kyok, *p3, k3; rep from * to 6 sts, p3, kyok, k2.
Row 3: K2, yo, *p3, k3; rep from * to last 5 sts, p3, yo, k2.
Row 4: K2, kyok, *k3, p3; rep from * to last 6 sts, k3, kyok, k2.
Row 5: K2, yo, k1, k2tog, yo, k3, *yo, sk2p, yo, k3; rep from * to last 5 sts, yo, ssk, k1, yo k2.
Row 6: K2, kyok, *k3, p3; rep from * to last 6 sts, k3, kyok, k2.
Rep Rows 1-6 for patt.

Border Lace Stitch Pattern

Set up Row (WS): K2, kyok, purl to last 3 sts, kyok, k2.
Row 1 (RS): K2, yo, k3, *yo, sk2p, yo, k3; rep from * to last 2 sts, yo, k2.
Rows 2 and 4: K2, kyok, purl to last 3 sts, kyok, k2.
Row 3: K2, yo, k1, k2tog, yo, k3, *yo, sk2p, yo, k3; rep from * to last 5 sts, yo, ssk, k1, yo, k2.

Pattern Notes

The pattern is made top-down first working the basketweave stitch pattern in the body of the shawl, and then working the border lace stitch pattern, finishing with a picot bind off.

Row 5: K2, yo, k1, k2tog, yo, k3, yo, ssk, k1, yo, k2. (15 sts)
Row 6: K2, kyok, k3, p3, k3, kyok, k2. (19 sts)

Body

Work Rows 1-6 of Basketweave Stitch pattern, either from chart or written instructions for a total of 15 times, ending with Row 5 on last rep.

Border Lace

Work Border Lace Stitch pattern, either from chart or written instructions.
Rep Rows 1-4 for a total of 8 times.

Picot Bind Off

K2, sl 2 sts back to LN, k2togtbl, (k1, sl 2 sts back to LN, k2togtbl) 3 times, *CO 2 sts using the cable method, immediately BO the next 3 sts (to make picot), (k1, sl 2 sts back to LN, k2togtbl) 5 times; rep from * to end.

Finishing

Weave in ends. Block to finished measurements.
