Orange Blossom Cowl

The organic and delicate lace openwork gives a romantic allure to the Orange Blossom Cowl. This elegant and poetic design is knitted flat, and stitches are grafted to form a graceful loop.

Skill Level: Easy

Size: 13” wide x 32” circumference

Gauge: 18 sts and 15 rows = 4” [10 cm] in St st after wet blocking; 15 sts and 20 rows = 4” [10 cm] in Lace pattern st after wet blocking

Materials

Yarn: Omega Sinfonia (100% Cotton; 218 yards [200 meters] /100 grams): Salmon (2 balls)

Needles: US size 6 (4 mm) 32” circular or straight

Notions: Tapestry needle, stitch markers (optional), waste yarn for provisional cast-on in contrast color, smaller knitting needle (optional)

Abbreviations

CDD (center double decrease): Sl 2 sts as if to knit, k next st, psso (pass slipped sts over) the k st.

Special Stitches

Provisional cast-on method

  1. Make a slipknot with working yarn and waste yarn in contrast color and place it on right hand needle (it’s not a st).
  2. Tension the working yarn with left index finger and waste yarn with your left thumb.
  3. With working yarn, *knit below waste yarn, yo (2 sts made); rep from * as necessary for the project.

Grafting Garter Stitch and Stockinette Stitch  

There are two steps to set-up grafting in Garter Stitch.

  1. Insert tapestry needle as if to purl into the first st on the front needle, leave st on needle.
  2. Insert tapestry needle as if to purl into the first st on the back needle, leave st on needle.
  3. Insert tapestry needle as if to knit into the first st on the front needle, drop st off needle.
  4. Insert tapestry needle as if to purl into the next st on the front needle, leave st on needle.
  5. Insert tapestry needle as if to knit into the first st on the back needle, drop st off needle.
  6. Insert tapestry needle as if to purl into the next st on the back needle, leave st on needle.

Rep Step 3.

Transition to grafting in Stockinette Stitch

Rep Step 4 (it’s a Stockinette Stitch) and Step 5 above from grafting in Garter Stitch.

  1. Insert tapestry needle as if to knit into the next st on the back needle, leave st on needle.
  2. Insert tapestry needle as if to knit into the first st on the front needle, drop st off needle.
  3. Insert tapestry needle as if to purl into the next st on the front needle, leave st on needle.
  4. Insert tapestry needle as if to purl into the first st on the back needle, drop st off needle.

Rep Steps 1-4 to the last 2 garter sts in the back needle.

Transition back to grafting in Garter Stitch

Rep Step 6 from grafting in Garter Stitch, then rep Step 2 from grafting in Stockinette Stitch. Next, rep Steps 4, 5, 6, 3, 4, 5, 3 above from grafting in Garter Stitch.

This pattern is worked flat using a provisional cast-on method and stitches are grafted at the end.

There are 4 sections of the Lace Pattern lengthwise.

Finishing

Place the two ends parallel to each other and carefully unravel waste yarn used for provisional cast-on, with smaller needle if it is necessary.

Leave a long tail of working yarn for grafting stitches in Garter Stitch and Stockinette Stitch, carefully matching tension.

Weave in ends. Wash gently and block to measurements.
