Frosted Snowblossom Mittens

Delicate flowers, white as frost, climb from the ribbed cuffs to the triangular tips of these mittens. Afterthought style thumbs keep the construction simple on these gorgeous mitts.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: Adult Medium (Large) to fit 7½” (8½”) hand circumference.

Shown in size Medium.

Gauge: 37 sts and 37 rows = 4” [10 cm] in Stranded Colorwork.

Materials

Super fine weight yarnYarn: Cascade Yarns Heritage Silk (85% Superwash Merino Wool, 15% Silk; 437 yards [400 meters]/100 grams): 5655 Como Blue (MC), 1 ball; 5618 Snow (CC), 1 ball.

Needles: US size 1 (2.25 mm): DPNs or circular

Notions: Stitch holder or waste yarn; tapestry needle.

Abbreviations

RL = Right leaning backwards loop increase

Special Stitches

Backwards loop increase: Twist the working yarn into a loop, (twist clockwise for a Left Leaning increase and counterclockwise for Right Leaning increase), slip the loop onto the working needle and pull tight.

Pattern Notes

These mitts are worked in the round from the bottom up.

There are separate colorwork charts for right and left hand mittens in each size. Work one right and one left-hand mitten, using the charts for your size.

Some of the rounds are marked Size Large only. Skip these rounds when knitting the Medium size.

Hand

With MC, CO 64 (72) sts.

Rnds 1-17: *K2, p2; rep from * around.

Size Large only

Rnd 18-20: *K2, p2; rep from * around.

Size Medium only

Rnd 21: *K8, RL; rep from * around – 72 sts.

Size Large only

Rnd 21: *K9, RL; rep from * around – 80 sts.

All Sizes

Rnd 22: Knit

Rnd 23: With CC, knit.

Rnds 24-113: Work Stranded Colorwork chart from right to left and from bottom to top with the following instruction notes below.

Note: On chart Rnd 60, sl the 13 (15) marked sts pwise and transfer them to a stitch holder or waste yarn. CO 13 (15) sts in the colors indicated for Rnd 60. Continue working chart.

After completing the chart, break yarn, leaving a tail. Thread tail through rem sts and pull tight.

Thumb

Beginning at the side closest to the center of the hand, pick up 13 (15) Thumb sts from the top of the thumb hole, pick up 1 white st, pick up 13 (15) sts from holder, pick up 1 white st – 28 (32) sts.

Rnds 1-28: Beginning at the side closest to the center of the hand, work the Thumb chart.

After completing the chart, break yarn, leaving a tail. Thread tail through rem sts and pull tight.

Finishing

Use yarn ends to sew up any holes where the Thumb meets the Hand.

Weave in all ends. Block.
