Land of Sweets Shawl

When Clara and her Nutcracker Prince traveled to the Land of Sweets, they were welcomed by the Sugar Plum Fairy. The Land of Sweets Shawl is similarly a welcoming pattern that was designed to keep you warm on a chilly winter’s day. This crescent shawl has a wide lace border and is worked from the top down.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: 68” / [173 cm] wingspan x 28” / [71 cm] deep after blocking.

Gauge:  8 sts and 11 rows = 4” [10 cm] in St st.

Materials

Yarn: Debbie Bliss Roma (70% Wool, 30% Alpaca; 87 yards [80 meters]/100 grams; 53012 Palace, 5 balls.

Notions: 2 stitch markers; tapestry needle.

Abbreviations

sm – slip marker

tbl – through back loop

wyib – with yarn in back.

wyif – With yarn in front.

Special Stitches

m1 – With the left-hand needle, lift up the horizontal bar running between sts from front to back, knit into the front loop on right side of work, purl into the front of loop on wrong side.

skp – Slip the next stitch knitwise, then knit next stitch and pass the slipped stitch over.

Pattern Notes

The shawl begins with an I-cord, which is then turned and stitches are picked up along one side. Three stitches are slipped at the beginning of every row to continue the I-cord along the top edge of the shawl.

Work I-Cord

With DPNs or circular needles, CO 3 sts.

Row 1: K3, do not turn work to WS, but keep on RS and slide sts to the other end of needle, K3.

Rows 2-9: Rep Row 1, 8 more times.

Row 10: K3, turn work and pick up 1 st from side of I-Cord, (yo, pick up 1 st) 8 times, pick up 3 sts from end of I-cord – 23 sts.

Row 11: Sl 3 wyif, place marker (pm), p to last 3 sts, pm, p to end.

Body

Row 1 (RS): Sl 3 wyib, sm, m1, k to m, m1, sm, k to end – 2 sts inc’d.

Row 2: Sl 3 wyif, sm, m1, p to marker, m1, sm, p to end – 2 sts inc’d.

Rep these 2 rows 20 more times – 107 sts.

Elastic Bind-Off

K2, insert the left-hand needle into the front of 2 sts just worked, wrap yarn around right-hand needle, k2tog tbl, *k,there will be 2 sts on the right-hand needle, k2tog tbl; rep from * until 1 st rem on needles.

Break yarn and pull through last st to close.

Finishing

Weave in ends. Block.
