Fletching Hat

Bands of color and arrows highlight this unisex earflap hat which is worked in the round. Garter stitch is used for the earflaps, while the ties and top loops are done in I-Cord to complete the look.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: 19 (21)” head circumference to fit a man’s size S/M (M/L)

2” negative ease recommended.

Gauge: 21 sts and 22 rows = 4” [10 cm] in color pattern worked in the round

Materials

Yarn: Cascade Yarns Cascade 220 Heathers (100% Peruvian Highland Wool; 220 yards [200 meters/100 grams): #9656 Burnt Sienna (MC) 1 ball; #9460 Dune (A), 1 ball; #8013 Walnut (B), 1 ball

Needles: US size 6 (4 mm): 16” circular; US size 6 (4 mm): 1 set DPNs

Notions: Stitch markers; tapestry needle

Abbreviations

Tbl: Through back loop.

Special Stitches

Cable Cast On: *Insert RH needle into last st on LH needle knitwise, knit a stitch and place loop on LH needle; rep from *until desired amount of sts have been cast on.

Pattern Notes

To avoid puckering, carry colors loosely across WS of work.

To eliminate working in ends, carry yarn color not in use vertically while working pattern. Catch yarn every few rows.

Pattern

Earflaps (make 2)

With MC and circular needles, CO 17 (19) sts.

Row 1 (WS): Sl 1 purlwise, knit to end of row.

Rep Row 1 until Earflap meas 3” from beg, ending with a WS row.

Dec Row: Sl 1, k2tog, knit to end of row.

Rep Dec Row until 3 (4) sts rem.

Tie

Change to 2 DPNs.

Next Row: *K3 (4), sl sts just work back to LH needle; rep from * until Tie meas 8” from beg.

K3 (4) tog and fasten off last st.

Body of Hat

With MC and circular needles, CO 11 (12) sts, pick up and k16 (18) sts along CO edge of 1 Earflap, Cable Cast On 46 (50) sts, pick up and k16 (18) sts along CO edge of second Earflap, Cable Cast On 11 (12) sts. Join, pm between first and last st – 100 (110) sts.

Ribbing Rnd: *K1tbl, p1; rep from * around.

Rep Ribbing Rnd 8 times more.

Work Rnds 1-45 rnds of Chart.

Break both A and B.

Next Rnd: With MC, knit across rnd, dec (inc) 4 (2) sts evenly – 96 (112) sts.

Crown

Change to DPNs.

Dec Rnd: K2tog around – 48 (56) sts.

Rnds 2-3: Knit.

Rnd 4: Rep Dec Rnd – 24 (28) sts.

Rnd 5: Knit.

Rnds 6-7: Rep Dec Rnd – 6 (7) sts.

Rnd 8: (K2tog) 3 times, k0 (1) – 3 (4) sts.

Break MC. Change to A and 2 DPNs.

I-Cord Loops

**Work even on 3 (4) sts as for Earflap tie until loop meas 3½”.***

Join loop to top of hat: [With RH needle, pick up and k1 st at top of Hat, sl 1 I-cord st to same needle] 3 (4) times, slide sts to opposite end of DPN, [k2tog] 3 (4) times; rep from ** to *** 3 more times, making each loop shorter or longer as desired, and attaching each loop in a different place next to others.

On last loop, k3 (4) tog.

Break yarn leaving a 6” end. Take yarn to inside of hat and darn in end.
