Freya Fingerless Mitts

A panel of textured stitches resembling bells and ribbons is featured on the back of the Freya mitts. All knit stitches are worked through the back loops to add further texture and warmth. Leave your fingers free to do the typing while the rest of your hands remain toasty warm.

Fine weight yarn

Yarn: Plymouth Yarn Galway Sport (100% Highland Wool; 151 yards [138 meters]/50 grams): #722 Sand Heather (1 (2) balls)

Needles: US size 4 (3.5 mm) set of 4 DPNs.

Notions: Stitch markers, stitch holders, tapestry needle, cable needle (optional)

All Rnds: Knit all sts through back loop.

CO 47 (51) total sts, having 24 sts on Needle #1, 12 (14) sts on Needle #2, and 11 (13) sts on Needle #3.

Set Up Ribbing: Needle #1: K2, (p3, k3, p3, k2) twice, Needle #2: (k1, p1) 6 (7) times, Needle #3: k1, (p1, k1) 5 (6) times.

Work even in established rib patt for 11 rnds more, inc 1 st at end of last rnd. (48 (52) sts)

Thumb Gusset

Set up Rnd: Needle #1: Work Rnd 1 of Chart, Needles #2 and #3: k3, pm, k2, pm, work in Twisted Stockinette St to end of Needle #3.

Rnd 1 (Inc): Needle #1: Work next rnd of chart, Needles #2 and #3: k3, sm, K1B, k2, K1B, sm, work in Twisted Stockinette St to end of Needle #3.

Rnds 2-3: Work even, keeping to Chart patt on Needle #1 and Twisted Stockinette St on Needles #2 and #3.

Rep Rnds 1-3, inc 1 st after first marker and before second marker in gusset every marked (*) rnd indicated on chart until there are 14 (16) sts between markers.

Work 2 rnds even.

Begin Hand

Next Rnd: Needle #1: Work next rnd of chart, Needles #2 and #3: k3, removing markers sl next 14 (16) sts to holder, CO 2 sts to RH needle, knit to end of Needle #3. (48 (52) sts)

Keeping Needle #1 in chart patt and remaining sts in Twisted Stockinette St, work even without increasing until Rnd 10 of 3rd Chart rep has been completed, dec 4 sts evenly on Needle #1. (44 (48) sts)

Ribbing Rnd: *K1-tbl, p1; rep from * around.

Rep Ribbing Rnd 4 times more.

BO all sts.

Thumb Ribbing

Sl sts from holder to 2 DPNs, having 7 (8) sts on each needle.

With 3rd needle, pick up and knit 6 sts along CO edge of opening. (20 (22) sts)

Work Ribbing Rnd as for finger opening, dec 1 st at each end of Needle #3. (18 (20) sts)

Work even in established ribbing for 3 rnds more.

BO all sts.

Left Mitt

CO and work Cuff as for Right Mitt.

Thumb Gusset

Set up Rnd: Needle #1: Work Rnd 1 of Chart, Needles #2 and #3: Work in Twisted Stockinette St to last 5 sts of Needle #3, pm, k2, pm, k3.

Work as for Right Mitt, reversing shaping.

Finishing

Weave in all ends.
