Steeplechase Sweater

Knit in the round from the bottom up, the Steeplechase Sweater is designed for men and includes simple shaping, a crew neck and a subtle cable design throughout.

Size: Finished Chest Size 38 (42, 46, 50, 54, 58, 62)” to fit 36 (40, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60)”

2” positive ease recommended.

Gauge: 16 sts and 24 rows = 4” [10 cm] in St st after wet blocking

Materials

Medium weight yarn

Yarn: Knit Picks Wool of the Andes (100% Wool; 110 yards [100.5 meters]/50 grams): Aurora Heather (10 (12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22) balls)

Needles: US size 9 (5.5 mm) 24” circular and DPNs, US size 10 (6.0 mm) 24” circular and DPNs

Notions: Markers, stitch holders, cable needle (cn), tapestry needle

Special Stitches

Right Cross (RC): Insert the tip of the right-hand needle into the front of the 2nd st, knit 2nd st without removing from needle, knit first st through the front and slip both sts off left hand needle together.

Cable 4 Front (C4F): Sl 2 sts to a cable needle and hold in the front of work, knit the next 2 sts from the left-hand needle, then knit the 2 sts from the cable needle.

K1, P1 Rib

Rnd 1: *K1, p1; rep from * around.

Rep Rnd 1 for patt.

This pattern is worked in the round from the bottom up.

Pattern

Using smaller needles, CO 152 (168, 184, 200, 216, 232, 248). Connect to join in the rnd, place marker at beg of rnd and halfway through after the first 76 (84, 92, 100, 108, 116, 124) sts. Work K1, P1 Rib for 2”.

Switch to larger needles.

Rnd 1: *K2, p1, k4, p1; rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnds 2-4: Rep Rnd 1.

Rnd 5: *RC, p1, k4, p1; rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 6: Rep Rnd 1.

Rnds 7-10: Rep Rnds 5-6.

Rnds 11-14: Rep Rnd 1.

Rnd 15: *K1, p1, C4F, p1; rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 16: Rep Rnd 1.

Rep these 16 rnds until piece meas 18 (18.5, 18.5, 19, 19, 19.5, 20)” from CO edge or desired length.

Division

Back

At the beg of the next rnd, BO 5 sts, and work in patt to halfway point. Place the remaining sts on scrap yarn. Turn work, BO 5 sts at beg of WS rnd, and work in patt. (66 (74, 82, 90, 98, 106, 114) sts)

Continue in patt for 4.5 (5, 5.5, 6, 7, 7.5, 8)”.

Next Row (RS): Work in patt for 28 (29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34) sts, BO 10 (16, 21, 28, 34, 40, 46), work in patt to end.

Working each shoulder separately and cont in patt, dec 1 st at shoulder every other RS row until 22 (23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28) sts remain and armhole meas 8.5 (9, 9.5, 10, 11, 11.5, 12)” of length from armhole division.

BO all sts.

Front

Place the sts on the scrap yarn onto larger needle.

Next Row (RS): BO 5 sts and cont across in patt.

At the beg of the next WS row, BO 5 sts and cont in patt. (66 (74, 82, 90, 98, 106, 114) sts)

Cont in patt for 7.5 (8, 8.5, 9, 10, 10.5, 11)”. Work in patt for 23 (24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29) sts, BO 20 (26, 31, 38, 44, 50, 56), work in patt to end.

Working each shoulder separately and cont in patt, dec 1 st at shoulder on the next RS row until 22 (23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28) sts remain and armhole meas 8.5 (9, 9.5, 10, 11, 11.5, 12)” of length from armhole division.

BO all sts.

Using mattress stitch, seam shoulders together.

Collar

With smaller needles, PU 82 (86, 90, 94, 98, 102, 106) sts.

Work in K1, P1 Rib for 1”.

BO all sts.

Sleeves

PU 64 (72, 80, 80, 88, 96, 96) sts with larger DPNs, place marker to mark beg of rnd, and beg patt as follows, taking care to dec 1 st at the beg and end of each 6 (4, 4, 4, 5, 6, 6) rnds:

Rnd 1: *K2, p1, k4, p1; rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnds 2-4: Rep Rnd 1.

Rnd 5: *RC, p1, k4, p1; rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 6: Rep Rnd 1.

Rnds 7-10: Rep Rnds 5-6.

Rnds 11-14: Rep Rnd 1.

Rnd 15: *K1, p1, C4F, p1; rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnd 16: Rep Rnd 1.

Cont in patt until 32 (32, 32, 32, 36, 40, 40) sts rem and Sleeve meas 16”.

Switch to smaller needles.

Work in K1, P1 Rib for 2”.

BO all sts.

Finishing

Weave in all ends. Block to schematic dimensions.
