Midnight Mauve Garden Shawl

This is a bottom-up, crescent shawl was inspired by pink flowers at dusk.  The size and shape of the shawl lends itself to be worn either traditionally or draped in a number of ways around the neck, enhancing any outfit for any occasion.

Time: Approximately 20-25 hour Pattern

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: 44” x 16” (blocked and unpinned)

Gauge: 13 sts and 16 rows = 2” [5 cm] in St st with smaller needles, blocked.

Materials

Super fine weight yarnYarn: Blue Moon Fiber Arts Socks That Rock Lightweight (100% Merino;  405 yards [370 meters]/146 grams): Blush (1 skein)

Needles: US 9 (5.5 mm), US 5 (3.75 mm) straight or circular, long enough to accommodate a cast on of 313.

Notions: 12 Stitch Markers (optional), cable needle (optional), tapestry needle.

Abbreviations

Ssk (slip, slip, knit): Slip 2 sts as if to knit, k2tog through the back loop.

p2tog= purl 2 stitches together.

Ssp (slip, slip, purl): Slip 2 sts as if to knit, purl them together through the back loop.

Sssk (slip, slip, slip, knit): Slip 2 sts as if to knit, k3tog through the back loop.

Cdd (center double decrease): Slip 2 sts together as if to knit, knit next st, pass 2

slipped sts over the knit st.

Pattern Notes

This is a bottom-up crescent shawl.

RS (right side) (ODD numbered rows)

WS (wrong side) (EVEN numbered rows)

The stitch count remains the same until the decrease rows where it decreases by 22 sts.

Chart Notes

  • This is a bottom-up crescent shawl. There is a 3-stitch garter border on either side of the shawl that is NOT on the chart (total 6 sts). The chart repeats are bordered in RED.
  • The shaded squares are where there are no stitches and help to identify the chart.
  • RS (right side) (ODD numbered rows) – The chart is read from right to left. Work the 3-stitch garter border, work the chart, and work the 3-stitch garter border.
  • WS (wrong side) (EVEN numbered rows) – The chart is read from left to right. Work the 3-stitch garter border, work the chart, and work the 3-stitch garter border.
  • The red box border is the pattern repeat.
  • The stitch count remains the same until the decrease rows:

Chart Instructions

• CO 299, using long-tail cast-on method.
• Change to US 5/3.75mm needles to knit the shawl.
• Work Chart 1, Rows 1-.
• Work Chart 2 Rows.
• Row 79: K3, sm, [P1, K3, P1, K15, sm] 10 times, P1, K3, P1, sm, K3.
Row 80: BO all stitches. (P2tog, slip the stitch back onto left hand needle) repeat until all the stitches have been worked.
• Block, and weave in ends.

    The Midnight Mauve chart seems to be using non standard symbols. To follow the chart for this pattern one needs to know the Legand and there doesn’t seem to be one.
