Autumn Snap Shawl

A sideways shawl that is truly ready for the first cold snap! With a colorway and lacework that reminds us of looking up at falling leaves, this shawl is ready for chilly evenings.

Skill Level: Beginner

Size: 65” x 15” (relaxed)

This is the size of the sample, please keep in mind the size of your shawl will vary depending on your yarn yardage.

Gauge: 13 sts x 16 rows = 2” [5 cm] in St st after wet blocking.

Gauge is not necessarily crucial, it is more important to work the three sections (increase, even and decrease) in approximate 33% increments, requiring a yarn scale, and working the shawl according to your own yarn skein’s yardage.

Materials

Yarn:

super fine weight yarn Blue Moon Fiber Arts Socks that Rock Lightweight (100% Merino; 405 yards [370.3 meters]/146 grams): The Skein with No Name, 1 skein

Notions: 1 Marker; tapestry needle

Pattern Notes

This shawl is worked sideways. It is increased over approximately the first 33% of the skein, worked even over the next approximate 33%, and then decreased the rest of the yarn’s weight.

You will need to weigh your yarn on a yarn scale before and as you knit this shawl.

The shawl is divided up into two sections: The body and the border.

The Body is the “Increase/Even/Decrease Section”.  The stitch count will increase 1 stitch every other row. By the end of each 10-row repeat, you will have increased 5 stitches. Increase until you have used 33% of your yarn’s weight. Then work this section even, meaning no more increases, until you have used 66% of the yarn’s total weight. Once you have 33% of your yarn’s weight remaining, decrease 1 stitch every other row. By the end of each repeat, you will have decreased 5 stitches.

The Border’s stitch counts will increase and then decrease, creating the bottom pattern on the shawl. These stitch counts can be found at the end of each row in the written instructions, and alongside the chart, on the left.

Once you have successfully decreased back to the original 28 stitches, follow finishing instructions.

Please pay special attention to the ssp (slip, slip purl) stitch. This stitch is purled through the back loop.

Please remember, you need to repeat the sections according to your own yarn skein yardage.

Chart Instructions

Chart Notes

RS (Right Side) (ODD numbered rows) – The chart is read from right to left.

WS (Wrong Side) (EVEN numbered rows) – The chart is read from left to right.

The stitch marker is placed where the RED LINE is on the chart.

CO 28 sts.

Set-up Row 1: K11, pm, K17 – 28 sts.

Set-up Row 2: K28. (28)

Start working from the chart repeating Rows 1-10 increasing every other row until you have used close to 33% of your yarn.

Once you have ended increasing on Row 10, continue in pattern working even, no longer doing the kfb increases, knitting to marker making no increase

Work even until you have used the next approximate 33% of your yarn. Stop working even when you have used close to 66% of your total yarn weight before you started.

Once you have ended working even on Row 10, start decreasing.

Continue in pattern with the decrease chart below working Rows 1-10, decreasing every other row.

Once you have successfully decreased back to the original 28 stitches, follow finishing instructions.

Finishing

Knit 2 rows.

BO, weave in ends and block. Enjoy! yarn ball
