This romper is knit in one piece from the bottom up. Neck ruffle is knit separately and joined to picked-up stitches around the neck.

Stitch Guide

K1, P1 Ribbing (even number of sts)

Rnd 1: *K1, p1; rep from * to end.

Textured Columns (multiple of 5 sts, worked in the rnd)

Rnd 1: Knit.

Rnd 2: K2, *p1, k4; rep from * to last 3 sts, p1, k2.

Pattern

Left Leg

With smallest DPNs, CO 34 (36, 38, 42, 46) sts, join to work in the rnd.

Work in K1, P1 Ribbing until piece meas 2” from CO edge.

Main Leg

Switch to middle size DPNs.

Set-up Rnd: Knit, increasing 6 (9, 12, 13, 14) sts evenly around – 40 (45, 50, 55, 60) sts.

Establish Pattern

Rep Rnds 1-2 of Textured Columns patt twice.

Inc Rnd: K1, m1, work in patt to last st, m1, k1 – 2 sts inc’d.

Maintaining new sts in Textured Columns patt, rep Inc Rnd every 4 (4, 6, 6, 8) rnds 5 (1, 6, 2, 6) more time(s) – 52 (49, 64, 61, 74) sts.

Rep Inc Rnd every 6 (6, 8, 8, 10) rnds 2 (6, 1, 5, 1) time(s) – 56 (61, 66, 71, 76) sts.

Work even in patt until piece meas 8 (9, 10, 11, 12)”, ending with an even numbered rnd.

Break yarn. Place first and last 3 sts of rnd on holder, place rem sts on separate holder.

Right Leg

Work as for Left Leg. Do not break yarn.

Join Legs

Rnd 1: Working onto circ needle, k3 from Right Leg, place these 3 sts plus the previous 3 sts onto holder, knit across rem Right Leg sts, knit across Left Leg sts, PM and join to work in the rnd – 100 (110, 120, 130, 140) sts.

Work Rnd 2 of Textured Columns patt.

Rep Rnds 1-2 of patt until piece meas 2” from joining, ending with Rnd 1.

Separate for Back Opening

Row 1: Work Rnd 2 of Textured patt to last 3 sts, BO next 6 sts, knit to end – 94 (104, 114, 124, 134) sts.
Row 2 (WS): Work Row 2 of patt to end.

Cont to work back and forth in rows until work meas 4¾ (6, 6¾, 7¾, 8¼)” from separation, ending with a RS row.

Knit a WS row.

Establish New Pattern

Knit a WS row, increasing 3 (1, 3, 1, 3) sts evenly across row – 97 (105, 117, 125, 137) sts.

Purl 2 rows.

Switch to largest needle.

Beg with Row 1, work in Lattice Patt until work meas 6 (7½, 8½, 9¾, 10½)” from separation, ending with WS Row 4 or 8 of patt.

Separate Work

Note: If there are not enough stitches for a full pattern repeat, maintain these extra stitches in stockinette stitch.

Row 1 (RS): Work in patt over 21 (23, 25, 27, 29) Left Back sts, BO 4 (4, 6, 6, 8) armhole sts, work in patt over 47 (51, 55, 59, 63) Front sts, BO 4 (4, 6, 6, 8) armhole sts, work in patt over rem 21 (23, 25, 27, 29) Right Back sts. Place Left Back sts on holder, place Front sts on separate holder.

Right Back

Work even in patt over Right Back sts until piece meas 4½ (5, 5¼, 5¾, 6¼)” from armhole bind-off, ending with WS Row 4 or 8 of patt.

BO all sts.

Left Back

Work even in patt over Right Back sts until piece meas 4½ (5, 5¼, 5¾, 6¼)” from armhole bind-off, ending with WS Row 4 or 8 of patt.

BO all sts.

Front

Work even in patt over Front sts until piece meas 3 (3½, 3½, 4, 4¼)” from armhole bind-off, ending with WS Row 4 or 8 of patt.

Shape Front Neck

Row 1 (RS): Work in patt over 18 (19, 20, 21, 22) sts, attach new ball of yarn and BO center 11 (13, 15, 17, 19) sts, work in patt over rem 18 (19, 20, 21, 22) sts.

Working both sides at once, BO 3 sts at neck edge once, 2 sts at neck edge once, 1 st at neck edge twice – 11 (12, 13, 14, 15) sts rem for each shoulder.

Work even in patt until piece meas 4½ (5, 5¼, 5¾, 6¼)” from armhole bind-off, ending with WS Row 4 or 8 of patt.

BO off all sts.

Finishing

Block piece to finished measurements.

Buttonband

With smallest needle and RS facing, pick up and knit 61 (71, 81, 91, 101) sts evenly along Right Back from Neck edge to separation bind-off.

Row 1 (WS): *P1, k1; rep from * to last st, p1.

Row 2 (RS): *K1, p1; rep from * to last st, k1.

Rows 3-7: Work in rib as est’d.

BO all sts kwise over the next RS row.

Buttonhole Band

With smallest needle and RS facing, pick up and knit 61 (71, 81, 91, 101) sts evenly along Left Back from separation bind-off edge to Neck edge.

Row 1 (WS): *P1, k1; rep from * to last st, p1.
Row 2 (RS): *K1, p1; rep from * to last st, k1.
Row 3: Rep Row 1.
Row 4: (K1, p1) 3 times, [ssk, yo, (k1, p1) 4 times] 5 (6, 7, 8, 9) times, ssk, yo, k1, p1, k1 – 6 (7, 8, 9, 10) buttonholes.
Rows 5-7: Work even in rib as est’d.

BO all sts kwise over the next RS row.

Join leg bind-off sts using kitchener stitch. Sew edge of Buttonband to Separation bind-off. Sew side of Buttonhole Band to Separation bind-off over Buttonband. Sew shoulder seams.

Collar

With middle size cird needle and RS facing, pick up and knit 17 (18, 19, 20, 21) sts along Right Back Neck, 37 (38, 39, 43, 44) sts along Front Neck, and 17 (18, 19, 20, 21) sts along Left Back Neck – 71 (74, 77, 83, 86) sts. Break yarn, set aside.

With middle size circ needle, CO 115 (120, 125, 135, 140) sts.

Purl 1 row.

Knit 1 row.

Establish Pattern

Row 1 (RS): Knit.
Row 2 (WS): K2, *k1, p4; rep from * to last 3 sts, k3.

Rep Rows 1-2 of patt until piece meas 2 (2¼ (2¼, 2½, 2¾)”, ending with RS Row 1.

Dec Row (WS): K2, *k1, p2tog, ssp; rep from * to last 3 sts, k3 –  71 (74, 77, 83, 86) sts.

Join Collar

Hold current needle parallel with needle holding picked up sts from main piece.

Joining Row (RS): *K2tog (1 st from each needle; rep from * to end –  71 (74, 77, 83, 86) sts.

Purl 1 row.

Knit 1 row.

Folding Row (WS): P1, *p2tog, yo; rep from * to last 2 sts, p2.

Knit 1 row.

Purl 1 row.

Knit 1 row.

BO all sts pwise over the next WS row, leaving 18” tail.

Sew each bind-off stitch to the inside of the neckline along the pick-up edge from collar.

Armhole Edging

With middle size DPNs and RS facing, beg at center of underarm, pick up and knit 54 (58, 64, 70, 76) sts evenly around Armhole. Join to work in the rnd.

Knit 3 rnds.

Folding Rnd: *K2tog, yo; rep from * to end.

Knit 3 rnds.

BO all sts leaving 18” tail.

Sew each bind-off stitch to the inside of the Armhole along the pick-up edge.

Sew buttons to buttonband opposite buttonholes.

Weave in ends.

Block Collar and edgings.
