Wish You Well Shawl

This slender crescent shawl has an open wave cable and a border of flower bulbs. Autumn is around the corner which means it’s time to have a shawl to cover your shoulders as you venture outside to take photos of the sunset.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: 51½” wide x 14½” deep

This is the size of the sample, please keep in mind the size of your shawl will vary depending on your yarn yardage.

Gauge: 13 sts and 16 rows = 2” [5 cm] in St st after wet blocking.

Gauge is not necessarily crucial, it is more important to work the three sections (increase, even, and decrease) in approximate 33% increments, requiring a yarn scale, and working the shawl according to your own yarn skein’s yardage.

Materials

Yarn:

super fine weight yarn Cherry Tree Hill Yarn Supersock Select (100% Merino; 420 yards [384 meters]/100 grams): Struggle for Acceptance, 1 skein

Needles: US size 5 (3.75mm): straight or circular needles.

Notions: 1 Marker; tapestry needle

Special Stitches

BC – slip 2 sts to cn, hold in back, k2 sts, k2 from cn.

K1S7TTR (knit 1, slip 7 to the right) – k1, return that stitch back to the left hand needle and with the point of the right hand needle, pass the last 7 stitches, one at a time, over this stitch and off the needle. Slip that stitch back to the right hand needle.

Pattern Notes

This shawl is worked sideways. It is increased over approximately the first 25% of the skein, worked even over the next approximate 50%, and then decreased the rest of the yarn’s weight.

You will need to weigh your yarn on a yarn scale before and as you knit this shawl.

The shawl is divided up into two sections: The BODY and the BORDER.

The BODY: The Body is the “Increase/Even/Decrease Section”. The stitch count will increase 1 stitch every other row. By the end of each 16-row repeat, you will have increased 8 stitches. Increase until you have used 25% of your yarn’s weight. Then work this next section even, meaning no more increases until you have used 75% of the yarn’s total weight. Once you have 25% of your yarn’s weight remaining, decrease 1 stitch every other row. By the end of each repeat, you will have decreased 8 stitches.

The BORDER: The Border’s stitch counts will increase and then decrease, creating the bottom pattern on the shawl. These stitch counts can be found at the end of each row in the written instructions and alongside the chart on the left.

Once you have successfully decreased back to the original 21 stitches, follow finishing instructions.

Please pay special attention to the ssp (slip, slip purl) stitch. This stitch is purled through the BACK loop.

Please remember, you need to repeat the sections according to your own yarn skein yardage.

Chart Instructions

Chart Notes

RS (Right Side) (ODD numbered rows) – The chart is read from right to left.

WS (Wrong Side) (EVEN numbered rows) – The chart is read from left to right.

The stitch marker is placed where the RED LINE is on the chart.

CO 21.

Set-up Row 1: K5, pm, K16 – 21 sts.

Set-up Row 2: Knit – 21 sts.

Start working from the increase chart repeating Rows 1-16 increasing every other row in the body section until you have used close to 25% of your yarn.

Once you have ended increasing on Row 16, continue in pattern working even section, no longer doing the kfb increases, knit to marker making no increases.

Work even until you have used almost 75% of your yarn’s total weight.

Once you have ended working even on Row 16, start decreasing.

Continue in pattern with the decrease chart below, working Rows 1-16, decreasing every other row in the body section.

Once you have successfully decreased back to the original 21 stitches, follow finishing instructions.

Finishing

Knit 2 rows.

BO, weave in ends and block. Enjoy!
