Mulberry Wine Cowl

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: 30” / [76 cm] circumference x 10.25” / [26 cm] height

Gauge: 23 sts and 32 rows = 4” [10 cm] in stitch pattern after wet blocking with larger needles

23 sts and 30 rows = 4” [10 cm] in garter st after wet blocking with smaller needle

Materials

Medium weight yarnYarn: Malabrigo Yarn Rios (100% Merino Superwash; 109 yards [100 meters]/50 grams): Illusion (2 skeins)

Needles: US size 7 (4.5 mm) 24” / [60 cm]; US size 5 (3.75 mm) 24” / [60 cm].

Notions: Removable marker, waste yarn, tapestry needle, cable needle (cn).

Abbreviations

1/2 LC (1/2 left leaning cable): Put 1 st on cable needle (cn), hold in front, k2, k1 from cn.

1/2 RC (1/2 right leaning cable): Put 2 sts on cable needle (cn), hold in back, k1, k2 from cn.

Pattern Notes

The cowl is worked bottom up in the round. You can modify the final circumference adding more sts and working more repeats of the stitch pattern (just pay attention to keep the total number as a multiple of 4 sts). You can also modify the height just adding more rows repeats.

Pattern

With Long-tail CO Method, CO 160 sts. Pm, join to work in the rnd, taking care not to twist sts.

Rnd 1: Purl.

Rnd 2: Knit.

Rnds 3-6: Rep Rows 1-2 twice more.

Rnd 7: *K1, sl1, k2; rep from * to end.

Rnd 8: Rep Rnd 7.

Rnd 9: *K1, 1/2 LC; rep from * to end.

Rnd 10: *K1, k1 without dropping the st from LHN, pass the second st on RHN over the first st (the last knitted st), ktbl in the first st on LHN (the one you didn’t drop after knitting it), drop the st from LHN; rep from * to end.

Rnd 11: *K1, p1; rep from * to end.

Rnd 12: *Sl1, k3; rep from * to end.

Rnd 13: Rep Rnd 12.

Rnd 14: Rm, sl1, pm, k1, 1/2 RC; rep from * to end.

Rnds 15-16: Rep Rnds 10-11.

Rnd 17: Sl2, *k1, sl1, k2; rep from * to last 2 sts, k1, sl1.

Rnd 18: Rep Rnd 7.

Rep Rnds 9-18, 6 more times.

Rep Rnd 9 once more.

Rep Rnds 1-6 once.

BO all sts.

Finishing

Weave in ends.

Block Cowl flat.

    Help! What does sl2 mean at the beginning of this row…Rnd 17: Sl2, *k1, sl1, k2; rep from * to last 2 sts, k1, sl1. Literally slip 2 stitches knitwise or slip 2 as if to knit????
