Cavalier Cabled Throw

Cavalier is a cozy cabled throw worked in a bulky weight yarn with a stockinette and garter stitch diamond pattern. The cast on and bind off, plus the sides, are worked with I-cord to result in neat, fray-free edges. I-cord is also a great place to hide ends when changing skeins of yarn. Once complete, the start and finish edges are decorated with tassels for additional flair.

Time: 70 to 80 hours, including making the tassels.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: Approximately 56 by 56 inches, not including the tassels.

Gauge: 13 sts and 16 rows = 4” [10 cm] in St st before blocking

18 sts and 22 rows = 4” [10 cm] in Large Diamond cable pattern before blocking

Yarn: KnitPicks Wool of the Andes Bulky Weight (100% Peruvian Highland Wool; 137 yards [125 meters]/100 grams): 28214 Gosling 19 skeins (Note: blanket takes 17.5 skeins, tassels take 1.5 skeins)

Special Stitches

I-Cord Cast on:

Cast on 3 stitches using a Long-Tail Cast On.

*Slip 3 stitches to the left needle with working yarn in back, knit the first stitch front and back (keeping the first stitch firm but not tight for each row), knit 2.

Repeat from * until there are the required number of cast-on stitches.

I-Cord Bind Off:

*K2, k2togtbl, slip 3 sts from right needle to left needle;

Repeat from * to last 6 sts.

Place first three and last 3 sts onto separate Dpns and use Kitchener stitch to seam them together.

3/1 RC cable: Sl first st onto cn and hold at back, k3, k1 from cn.

3/1 LC cable: Sl 3 sts onto cn and hold at front, k1, k3 from cn.

Wrap 6 stitches: Sl 6 sts onto Dpn or cn; wyib, wrap around back of held sts and then around front three times; ensure each wrap sits neatly on top of the previous wrap; wyib, sl 1, k5.

How to Make Tassels: See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zo5CK5XDf9A for technique.  Wrap length of yarn fourteen (14) times around short side of DVD case.  Cut a length of yarn 10” to 12” long and tie strands together at top of tassel.  Take another length of yarn and wrap around tassel approximately 1” from top. Use tapestry needle to run ends of tie yarn down into body of tassel.  Cut ends and trim to 4.5”.

Pattern Notes

If you wish to make this throw longer, more yarn will be needed.
