Pattern

I prefer 1.5 inches for the cuff and 4 inches for the leg, making a total of 5.5 inches before starting heel. If knitting a longer leg, please account for more yardage.

CO: Small 56 (Medium 64, Large 72) using long-tail cast-on method, join in round

pay careful attention as not to twist. Divide stitches evenly on the needles. If using DPNs, you may need to move stitches from needle to needle from time to time to accommodate the stitch pattern, depending on how you distribute your stitches. Place stitch marker, or locking stitch marker, to mark the beginning of the round.

CUFF (RIBBING)

[Ktbl, P1] 28 (32, 36) times

Repeat cuff pattern for 1.5-2 inches.

Leg

Begin written instructions or work from chart, repeating Rounds 1-24 for the stitch pattern.

Work leg 1.5-2 inches less than the desired length of the leg.

Heel Flap

Knit the next round in pattern (written instructions or chart) over the first 28 (32, 36) sts.

Make special note of the last round you worked in pattern, as you will continue by working the NEXT round of the pattern once the heel has been turned. The heel is worked over the last 28 (32, 36) stitches.

Gusset

Knit 8 (9, 10), pm.  This will be the new beginning of the round.

Note:  In this section “Needles 1, 2, 3 and 4” will refer to 4 DPNs.   If you are using

magic loop, “Needles 1 and 4” will be working the sole and “Needles 2 and 3” will be working the pattern on the instep.

Set-up round: Needle 1: Knit 8 (9, 10).  Pick up and knit 14 (16, 18) (one in each of the slipped stitches) along the heel flap. Needle 2 and Needle 3: Work the next round of the pattern (chart or written instructions). Needle 4:  Pick up and knit 14 (16, 18) (one in each of the slipped stitches) along the other side of the heel flap, knit to marker.

Round 1:

Needle 1: Knit until last 3 sts, K2tog, K1.

Needles 2 and 3: Continue to work in established pattern using chart or written instructions.

Needle 4: K1, SSK, knit to marker.

Round 2:

Needle 1: Knit.

Needles 2 and 3: Continue to work in established pattern using chart or written instructions.

Needle 4: Knit.

Repeat these two rounds until you have a total of 56 (64, 72) stitches remaining on your needles.

Foot

Needle 1: Knit.

Needles 2 and 3: Continue to work in established pattern using chart or written instructions.

Needle 4: Knit.

Continue in this manner, repeating Rounds 1-20 of the pattern, until the foot measures 1.75 (2, 2.25) inches less than the total length of foot, repeating the pattern, ending on ROUND 20, or wherever you prefer. Continue the foot in stockinette rows if you are close enough to your desired length to start the toe.

Toe

Round 1:

Needle 1: Knit until last 3 sts, K2tog, K1.

Needle 2: K1, SSK, knit until end of needle.

Needle 3: Knit until last 3 sts, K2tog, K1.

Needle 4: K1, SSK, knit to marker.

Round 2: Knit.

Repeat rounds 1 and 2 until you only have 20 stitches left, 10 stitches on the instep and 10 stitches on the sole for all sizes. Knit 5 stitches onto Needle 1.  Now all of the 10 “top of the toe” stitches should be on Needles 2 and 3 and the 10 “bottom of the toe” stitches on Needles 1 and 4. Use Kitchener Stitch to close up the toe.

Weave in ends.  Make second sock the same as the first.  Enjoy!
