Open Road Mosaic Bandana

Hit the open road in style with the Open Road Mosaic Bandana. This small shawl or headscarf is designed to be the perfect companion for your next adventure, especially if it involves a convertible and a touch of movie-star glamour. Worked entirely in mosaic knitting, it uses simple slip-stitch colorwork, making it an ideal project for on-the-go knitting or a relaxing weekend project. Keep your hair stylishly tied back as you cruise down the highway, or wear it as a chic statement wherever the road takes you.

Abbreviations

M1l – make one left (insert left hand needle from front to back, under the bar between stitches, knit this loop through the back loop)

Special Stitches

Mosaic Colorwork: This technique creates colorwork designs by knitting with only one color at a time and slipping stitches of the other color. On right side rows, you will work a combination of knit stitches and slip stitches purlwise with the yarn in back. On wrong side rows, you will work a combination of purl stitches and slip stitches purlwise with the yarn in front. You will switch your working yarn color every two rows.

Pattern Notes

This pattern is worked flat as a sideways triangle. Begin with three stitches cast onto the needles, and increase by one stitch every right-side row until the halfway point is reached. Then, decrease by one stitch every right-side row until three stitches remain. Both charted and written instructions are included; follow one or the other based upon your preference. The increase/decrease stitch is worked immediately before the last two stitches of each right-side row. The pattern features two garter stitch edge stitches at the beginning and end of each row.

Charted Instructions

Chart Notes:

  • The charts are read from bottom to top.
  • Only Right Side (RS) rows are charted. Only one color (working color) is worked at a time. The working color is worked for two rows (one RS, one WS) before switching and is designated by the color of the first stitch in every row.
  • On WS rows, knit the first two stitches, and then work all stitches of the active color as purl stitches, and slip all stitches of the inactive color purlwise with yarn in front, following the pattern established on the previous RS row, knit the final two stitches.
  • Each square represents a stitch.
