Button Up Your Overcoat Scarf

You loved it last year, so here’s one last piece to the Button Up Your Overcoat Set! This long, cabled scarf features a row of trendy buttons down the side and pairs perfectly with the hat, mitts and bootcuffs from last February’s issue, seen below.

Size: One size

Gauge: 6 sts and 10 rows = 1” [2.5 cm] in Seed Stitch 

Materials

Yarn:

Light Weight Yarn Alpaca With a Twist Baby Twist DK (100% alpaca; 110 yards [101 meters]/50 grams): #3007 Red Wagon (Single Cable Scarf, 5 skeins), (Double Cable Scarf, 8 skeins)
Needles: US size 3 (3.25 mm) needles
Notions: Cable needle, tapestry needle, fifteen 5/8” (16 mm) buttons (or as many as needed)

Special Stitches

C6F (cable 6 front): Sl 3 sts to cable needle and hold to front of work, k3, k3 from the cable needle.
C6B (cable 6 back): Sl 3 sts to cable needle and hold to back of work, k3, k3 from the cable needle.

Single Cable Scarf Pattern

Bottom Section

CO 26 sts.
Row 1 (WS): *P1, k1; rep from * to last st, yib, s1p.
Row 2 (RS): P2, *k1, p1; rep from * to last st, yib, s1p.
Row 3: *P1, k1; rep from * to last st, yib, s1p.

Cable Section

Note: Beginning with Row 1 of the Cable Section, make a buttonhole every 10 rows (RS Rows 1, 11, 21, 31, etc). Work that row as follows: P1, k2, yo, k2tog, k1, continue in established pattern for that row.
Row 1 (RS): P1, k2, (p1, k1) 3 times, p8, (k1, p1) 3 times, k2, yib, s1p.
Row 2 (WS): P4, k1, p1, k1, p2, k1, p6, k1, p2, k1, p1, k1 p3, yib, s1p.
Row 3: P1, k2, (p1, k1) 3 times, p1, k6, p1, (k1, p1) 3 times, k2, yib, s1p.
Row 4: Rep Row 2.
Row 5: P1, k2, (p1, k1) 3 times, p1, C6F, p1, (k1, p1) 3 times, k2, yib, s1p.
Rows 6-11: Rep Rows 2-3.
Row 12: Rep Row 2.
Row 13: Rep Row 5.
Rep Rows 6-13 until piece measures half desired length. Continue to desired length without making buttonholes.

Top Section

Row 1 (WS): *P1, k1; rep from * to last st, yib, s1p.
Row 2 (RS): P2, *k1, p1; rep from * to last st, yib, s1p.
Row 3: *P1, k1; rep from * to last st, yib, s1p.
Bind off all sts.
Weave in ends and block.
Place and sew on buttons on the half without buttonholes.
