Deep Sea Striped Socks

These socks are worked top down with a heel flap and gusset decreases. Instead of an evenly repeating stripe pattern, the contrast color is used with varying distance, giving thicker and thinner stripes of main color. Using garter sts in the vertical pattern panel along the front make an extra striping effect for the color changes.

Pattern Notes

This pattern is worked in the round from the top down.

The pattern is written for working with two small circular needles. Needle 1 for back of leg, heel, gusset, and sole. Needle 2 for front of leg and instep. All rnds starts on Needle 1.

One color is used at a time. Do not break yarn at color changes, but carry unused color up until it is needed again. Bring new color under color just used.

To have jogless stripes, knit the first rnd with the new color and then in the beg of second rnd

use the Jogless Stripes method.

Pattern on front of leg will pull in a bit. This can be blocked out when finishing or will work fine as is when socks are on the feet.

The pattern includes charts supported with written text and also the alternative to only use written description. Due to the striping color pattern, following charts will be the preferred method for most knitters.

Pattern

Before you start

Cut two strands of MC 19.5” / [50 cm] long for use to pick up stitches on the right side of the heel flap.

Cuff

With CC, CO 52 (60, 68) sts.

K all sts. Turn and k all sts.

Turn and change to MC. K all sts and distribute equally on the two needles, 26 (30, 34) sts each. Join to work in the rnd, being careful not to twist sts.

Continue with working from Chart Cuff or written description below:

With MC, work Rnd 1-2 of Stitch Pattern Cuff. Change to CC and work rnd 1 and 2 of stitch pattern cuff. Rep these 4 rnds 5 times more. Cuff measures approx. 2” (5.5 cm).

Heel Flap

The heel flap is worked back and forth on Needle 1 with MC.

Start on the WS when Rnd 51 on Needle 1 is worked. Work rep rows for heel flap.

Rep Rows

Row 1 (WS): Sl1p, p remaining sts

Row 2 (RS): *Sl1k, k1; rep from *

Rep these 2 rows until Heel Flap meas 2.5-2.75”. The last row should be on the RS.

Cont with turning the heel.

Turning the heel

Row 1 (WS) Sl1p, p16 (18, 20), p2tog, p1, turn. Leaving 8 (10, 12) sts

Row 3 (WS): Sl1p, purl to 1 st before gap, p2tog, p1, turn

Row 4 (RS): Sl1k, k to 1 st before gap, ssk, k1, turn

Rep Rows 3-4 until all sts before the gaps on the WS rows have been worked. End at this WS row leaving 2 sts after the gap on the RS. Continue with gusset set up.

Gusset Set Up

With the RS facing, use the loose thread for pick up and k in the back loop 16 (17, 17) sts on the right side of the heel flap. Start on the instep corner. Leave the loose thread. With thread from yarn sl1k, k sts on heel flap until 1 st before gap. Rem sts are ssk, k1.

The last gap on the heel is now worked.
