Izzy Two-Tone Sweater

This alpine-inspired pullover uses two-tone coloring and different textures in a standard-fitting sweater. It is worked seamlessly from the bottom up with set-in style sleeves worked by picking up stitches around the armhole, then using short rows to shape the sleeve caps.

Gauge:  22 sts and 30 rows/rnds = 4”/10cm in Mock Cables with smaller needles, blocked

Materials

Yarn: Wonderland Yarns, Alice DK (70% superwash merino, 30% silk; 242yards [221 meters]/113 grams): #68 Mushroom (MC 2 (3, 3, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4) hanks and #00 White Rabbit (CC 3 (3, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 5) or 413 (457, 504, 556, 632, 687, 758, 795) yds/378 (418, 461, 508, 578, 628, 693, 728) m of MC and 571 (632, 697, 768, 873, 949, 1047, 1100) yds/522, 578, 640, 702, 799, 867, 957, 1006) m of CC.

Needles: US 6 size (4mm), circular 16”/40cm and 24 – 36”/60-80 cm, depending on size, and one set of double pointed needles (DPNs) or size needed to obtain gauge

US size 8 (5mm) circular 24 – 36”/60-80 cm, depending on size, and one set of double pointed needles (DPNs) or size needed to obtain gauge

Notions: Cable needle (optional), mocking stitch markers (or safety pin), stitch markers, stitch holders, tapestry needle, waste yarn or spare needle

Abbreviations

Wyif – with yarn in front

Yfwd – bring yarn forward to front of work

yb – take yarn to back of work

Knot – p3tog without slipping sts off left needle, yb, knit same 3 sts tog without slipping off needle, yfwd, p3tog and this time slip sts off to complete knot

w&t (RS row) – wyib slip next st p-wise, bring yarn to the front, slip same st back to left needle, turn work (yarn will be in back), bring yarn to the front and purl the next st firmly.

w&t (WS row) – wyif slip next st p-wise, bring yarn to the back, slip same st back to left needle, turn work (yarn will be in front), bring yarn to the back and knit the next st firmly.

w2&t (RS row) – wyib slip next 2 sts p-wise, bring yarn to the front, slip both sts back to left needle, turn work (yarn will be in back), bring yarn to the front and purl the next st firmly.

w2&t (WS row) – wyif slip next 2 sts p-wise, bring yarn to the back, slip both sts back to left needle, turn work (yarn will be in front), bring yarn to the back and knit the next st firmly.

To pick up wraps (RS row) – insert tip of right needle into wrap from front to back, then insert needle into st from front to back. Wrap yarn around needle as if to knit and pull new stitch through.

To pick up wraps (WS row) – insert tip of right needle from back to front through wrap and place it on left needle. P2tog.

1/1 RC – insert right needle into front of second st on left needle, knit this st but leave on needle, insert right needle into front of first st on left needle and knit it, let both sts drop. If you prefer using a cable needle, slip 1 st to cn, hold in back, k1, k1 from cn.

Pattern Notes

Body is worked in the round from the bottom up, divided at the armholes, then worked flat and front/back are joined with three-needle bind off. Stitches for sleeves are picked up around the armhole, sleeve caps are shaped with short rows, then worked in the round to the cuff.

Body

With larger circular needles and MC, using Channel Island Cast On, CO 204 (228, 252, 276, 300, 324, 348, 372) sts.

NOTE – work the first two rows flat, then join in the round and use the tail to close the gap.

Next Row (WS): Knit and untwist sts on needle as you go.

Next Row (RS): Knit to end, pm, join in the rnd. Place beginning of round marker.

Next Rnd: Work Rnd 1 of Snow Tracks Chart. Continue working all rnds, then work chart two more times. Work Rnds 1-6 once more. Piece will measure about 9”/22.5cm

Next Rnd: Change to smaller circular needles and with CC, knit.

Divide Front and Back

Next Row (RS): Rm, BO 6 (8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 14) sts, place locking st marker on last bound off st, work in patt to side marker, rm, turn, leave remaining sts for front on needles or transfer to waste yarn. NOTE – work on back sts only, flat, back and forth in rows. Make note of last row worked.

Next Row (WS): BO 6 (8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 14) sts, place locking st marker on last bound off st, purl to end. (81 (89, 96, 106, 116, 123, 131, 143) sts).

Shape Neck & Shoulders

Short Row 1 (RS): Work in patt over 20 (20, 23, 24, 26, 26, 26, 26) sts, join 2nd ball of yarn and BO center 37 (39, 40, 42, 42, 43, 45, 45) sts, place a removable market on first and last BO st, work in patt to last 5 (5, 5, 5, 6, 6, 6, 6) sts, w&t. Work both shoulders at the same, using 2 balls of yarn.

Short Row 2 (WS): Purl to neck opening; with next ball purl to last 5 (5, 5, 5, 6, 6, 6, 6) sts, w&t.

Short Row 3 (RS): Work in patt to 3 sts before neck opening, k2tog, k1; with next ball k1, ssk, work in patt to 5 (5, 5, 5, 6, 6, 6, 6) sts before wrapped st, w&t. (19 (19, 22, 23, 25, 25, 25, 25 sts per shoulder).

Short Row 1 (RS): Work in patt to neck opening; work in patt to last 5 (5, 5, 5, 6, 6, 6, 6) sts, w&t.

Short Row 2 (WS): Rep last row.

Short Row 3 (RS): Work in patt to neck opening; work in patt to 5 (5, 5, 5, 6, 6, 6, 6) sts before wrapped st, w&t.

Short Row 4 (WS): Rep last row.

Rep last 2 rows once.

Next Row (RS): Work in patt to neck opening; work in patt to end picking up all wraps.

Next Row (WS): Rep last row.

Return left back shoulder sts to separate needles with needle tips pointing in the same direction as front when the RS are held together. Make sure you have the same number of sts on each needle. With 3rd needle, BO all sts using Three-Needle Bind Off. Repeat for right shoulder.

Place a removeable marker in the center of the underarm and leave markers on the body that mark the underarm bind off row in place.

Right Sleeve

With RS facing, place a removeable marker 8 (9, 11, 11, 12, 13, 15, 15) rows down from shoulder seam on both front and back. Begin at the back. NOTE – Do not pick up wraps.

Begin Short Rows to Shape Upper Cap

NOTE – if you have difficulty seeing the wrapped sts, place a locking st marker on it to help identify.

NOTE – work st after w&t firmly, but don’t hold on to tighter tension across row. Work rest of sts in your normal tension to maintain gauge.

Short Row 1 (RS): Knit across shoulder seam to first marker, rm, w&t.

Short Row 2 (WS): Purl across shoulder seam to starting marker, rm, w&t.

Now there are 22 (24, 26, 26, 28, 30, 32, 32) sts between the wrapped sts. Cont to work Mock Cable Chart as est and rep Short Rows 7-8 until 5 sts rem before each underarm marker, incorporating new sts into chart when possible.

Shape Lower Cap

Next Short Row (RS): Work in patt to wrapped st, knit the wrapped st, w2&t.

Next Short Row (WS): Purl to wrapped st, purl the wrapped st, w2&t.

Dec Row (RS): Work in patt to the double wrapped sts, knit both wrapped sts together as 1 st, w2&t. 1 st dec’d.

Next Rnd: Purl. NOTE – If you wish a longer sleeve, work additional rnds in Garter stitch.

Next Rnd: BO all st using Channel Island Bind off.

Left Sleeve

With RS facing, place a removeable marker 8 (9, 11, 11, 12, 13, 15, 15) rows down from shoulder seam on both front and back. Begin at the front. Work as for Right Sleeve from + to end.

Finishing

Neckband: With smaller 16”/40cm needles, CC, and RS facing, begin at left shoulder seam and pick up and knit 20 (21, 21, 21, 21, 21, 22, 22) sts to marker, rm, pick up and knit 13 (13, 14, 14, 14, 15, 15, 15) sts to m, rm, pick up and knit 20 (21, 21, 21, 21, 21, 22, 22) sts to shoulder seam, pick up and knit 5 sts to m, rm, pick up and knit 37 (39, 40, 42, 42, 43, 45, 45) sts to m, rm, pick up and knit 5 sts to end. (100 (104, 106, 108, 108, 110, 114, 114) sts). Pm, join in the rnd.

Next Rnd: Purl.

Next Rnd: Knit.

Next Rnd: Purl.

Next Rnd: BO all sts purlwise.

Weave in ends. Use CO tail to close gap at body’s bottom edge. Block to measurements in schematic.
