Frosted Window Pane Plaid Sweater 

Introducing the Frosted Window Pane Plaid Sweater knitting pattern, a stylish fusion of classic design and modern technique. Gauge: 23 sts and 32 rows = 4” [10 cm] in Windowpane Plaid patt, in the round, after wet blocking.

Materials

Yarn: Berroco Ultra Wool DK (100% superwash wool, 292 yds [267 m]/100 g): MC – Cream 8301, 3 (3, 4, 4) (4, 5, 5) balls; CC – Stonewashed 83147, 1 ball; DK weight, 3 – light.

Needles: US size 3 (3.25mm) circular needles, 24” cord or larger.

Notions: stitch marker, spare needles, tapestry needle, tape measure, US size D crochet hook.

Pattern Notes

This pattern is knit bottom-up, seamlessly to underarm, in stripes of MC and CC, creating columns of purl sts for vertical stripes. Front and back and worked flat, shaping the neck. After joining shoulder seams, sleeve sts picked up and knit down, in the round, following the same patt as the body, finishing with turn down cuffs. Neck sts picked up and knitted to create a turned-down funnel neck. Finally, surface crochet technique is used to create vertical stripes.

Purl Columns Pattern, in the Rnd (multiple of 24 sts):

Rnd 1: *K 9, p 1, k 1, p 2, k 1, p 1, k 9; rep from * around.

Rep Rnd 1 for Patt.

Purl Columns Pattern, flat (multiple of 24 sts):

Row 1 (RS): *K 9, p 1, k 1, p 2, k 1, p 1, k 9; Rep from * across.

Row 2 (WS): *P 9, k 1, p 1, k 2, p 1, k 1, p 9; Rep from * across.

Rep Rows 1-2 for Patt.

Stripe Pattern (multiple of 32 Rnds):

Rnds 1-12: work in MC.

Rnd 13: work in CC.

Rnd 14: work in MC.

Rnds 15-16: work in CC.

Rnd 17: work in MC.

Rnd 18: work in CC.

Rnds 19-32: work in MC.

Rep Rnds 1-32 for Patt.

Pattern

Body

With MC, using a Long-tail CO method, CO 216 (240, 264, 288) (312, 336, 360) sts. Place BOR marker and join to work in the Rnd, being careful not to twist sts.

Begin working Purl Columns and Stripe Patterns simultaneously (from here referred to as “work in Patt”.) Work until piece measures 2” from CO edge.

Turn Edge Rnd: Purl.

Resume working in Patt until piece measures 12.5 (13, 13.5, 14) (14.5, 15, 15.5)” from CO edge, or until desired length to underarm plus 2”.

Split for Front and Back

Work in Patt for 108 (120, 132, 144) (156, 168, 180) sts, place the rest of the sts on a spare needle or waste yarn, turn.

Back

Work flat in Patt until armhole measures 6 (6.5, 7, 7.5) (8, 8.5, 9)” from the armhole split, ending with WS row.

Divide for Shoulders and Neck

Next Row (RS): Work in Patt for 35 (40, 46, 50) (52, 58, 63) sts (Right shoulder), BO 38 (40, 40, 44) (52, 52, 54) sts (Back Neck), work in Patt for 35 (40, 46, 50) (52, 58, 63) sts (Left Shoulder), turn.

Left Shoulder Shaping

Row 1 (WS): Work in Patt to last 2 sts, p2tog. 1 st Dec.

Row 2 (RS): K2tog, work in Patt across. 1 st Dec.

Rows 3-4: repeat Row 1 & 2 once more. 31 (36, 42, 46) (48, 54, 59) Shoulder sts.  Transfer sts onto a spare needle or waste yarn. Break yarn.

Right Shoulder Shaping

With WS facing, attach yarn at the base of the neck and start working on the Right Shoulder as follows:

Row 1 (WS): P2tog, work in Patt across. 1 st Dec.

Row 2 (RS): Work in Patt to last 2 sts, ssk. 1 st Dec.

Rep Row 1-2 once more. 31 (36, 42, 46) (48, 54, 59) Shoulder sts.

Transfer sts onto a spare needle or waste yarn.

Front

Transfer Front sts onto needle, with RS facing, and using MC, join yarn at the armhole.

Work flat in Patt until the armhole measures 5 (5.5, 6, 6.5) (7, 7.5, 8)” from armhole split, ending with WS row.

Next Row (RS): Work in Patt for 35 (40, 46, 50) (52, 58, 63) sts (Left Shoulder), BO 38 (40, 40, 44) (52, 52, 54) sts (Front Neck), work in Patt for 35 (40, 46, 50) (52, 58, 63) sts (Right Shoulder), turn.

Right Front Shaping

Row 1 (WS): Work in Patt to last 2 sts, p2tog. 1 st Dec.

Row 2 (RS): K2tog, work in Patt across. 1 st Dec.

Rep Rows 1-2 once more. 31 (36, 42, 46) (48, 54, 59) Shoulder sts.

Work in Patt until armhole depth is the same as for Back. Transfer sts to a spare needle or waste yarn. Break yarn.

Left Front Shaping

With RS facing join yarn at Right Armhole edge.

Row 1 (RS): Work in Patt to last 2 sts, k2tog. 1 st Dec.

Row 2 (WS): P2tog, work in Patt across. 1 st Dec.

Rep Rows 1-2 once more. 31 (36, 42, 46) (48, 54, 59) Shoulder sts.

Work in Patt even until armhole depth is the same as for Back. Transfer sts to a spare needle or waste yarn.

Shoulder Construction

With RS facing, join Right Front and Right Back Shoulder using a 3-Needle Bind Off method. Repeat for the Left Shoulder.

Sleeves

With RS facing, starting at the underarm, with MC pick up and knit 78 (84, 90, 96) (102, 108, 114) sts evenly around the armhole. PM for beginning of the Rnd.

Begin working as follows:

Setup Rnd: K 3 (6, 9, 0) (3, 6, 9) sts, work in Patt over next 72 (72, 72, 96) (96, 96, 96) sts, k 3 (6, 9, 0) (3, 6, 9) sts.

Continue to work in Patt as established until sleeve measures 1”. Begin working Dec as follows:

Dec Rnd: K2tog, work in Patt to last 2 sts, ssk. 2 sts Dec.

Rep Dec Rnd every 4th Rnd a total of 12 (13, 14, 15) (17, 19, 21) times. 54 (58, 62, 66) (68, 70, 72) sts on the needles.

Continue to work even in Patt until sleeve measures 11 (11.5, 11.5, 11.5) (12, 12, 12)” from underarm.

Next Rnd: Purl.

Work in Patt for 1.5”. BO all sts loosely.

Rep for second sleeve.

Funnel Neck

With MC and RS facing, join yarn at Left Shoulder seam. PU and knit 8 sts down the Left Front Neck edge; 38 (40, 40, 42) (52, 52, 54) sts along Front Neck; 8 sts up Right Front Neck edge; 3 sts down Right Back Neck edge; 38 (40, 40, 42) (52, 52, 54) sts along Back Neck; 3 sts up Left Back Neck edge. Place BOR marker and join to work in the Rnd. 98 (102, 102, 106) (126, 126, 130) sts on the needle.

Work in Patt, placing purl columns to line up with purl columns in the body. Work for 1.5”. Purl 1 Rnd. Resume working in Patt for another 1.5”. BO all sts loosely.

Finishing

Steam or wet block the garment prior to adding vertical stripes. Using crochet hook and CC add vertical stripes to Front and Sleeves, following purl columns, and placing 2 stripes in the center and 1 stripe to the right of each set of columns (or following your own placement pattern.) Fold over to WS hem, cuffs, and neck, along purl row, and sew to WS using tapestry needle. Weave in the ends.
