Cabin Comfort Lounge Socks

These long lacy socks will have you dancing around the house as the snow falls softly outside your window. Thick enough to keep your feet cozy but pretty enough to make you feel special during those long winter days lounging around the house. Starting with a picot edge, the sock transitions to a pretty eyelet pattern that’s easy to knit and remember! Combine those elements with a worsted weight yarn and you’ll have these off the needles and on your feet in no time.

Time: 2 Week Project

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: Adult medium – 8.5” foot circumference. Sock is 12” tall from bottom of foot

Gauge: 22 sts and 32 rnds = 4” [10 cm] in stranded St st after wet blocking

Materials

Medium weight yarnYarn: Manos del Uruguay Alegria Grande (75% superwash Merino wool, 25% nylon; 197 yards [100 meters]/100 grams): 2357 Fern (2 skeins)

Approximately 120 g (240 yds) of a superwash worsted weight.

Needles:

US size 5 (3.75 mm) dpns or size to obtain gauge

US size 5 (3.75 mm) 9” circular or size to obtain gauge

Notions: Locking stitch markers (contrasting colors), tapestry needle, scissors

Pattern Notes

The sock is worked in the round from the cuff down beginning with a provisional cast on to create the picot edge.  As written, the foot is 9” long. The length of the sock can be adjusted before you begin the toe. To make it shorter, knit 5 less rnds of gusset lace pattern. To make it longer knit 5 more rnds of gusset lace pattern. Each repeat is approx. 5/8”. Just be sure to end with rnd 1 of gusset lace pattern.

Pattern

CO 42 using the crochet provisional cast on method.

Divide stitches evenly over 3 dpns, (14 sts each needle). Join to work in the rnd making sure not to twist.

Cuff

Place locking stich marker in row below for BOR.

Rnds 1 – 8: Knit.

Rnd 9: *K2tog, yo, repeat from * to end.

Rnds 10 – 17: Knit.

Transfer provisionally CO sts to circular needle. Fold in half with WS together and join folded hem as follows.

Rnd 18 (Join): *K tog 1 st from front needle (dpn) with 1 st from back needle (circular). Repeat from * to end of round. (42 sts). This creates the picot cuff.

Sock

Leg Lace Pattern

Rnd 1: *K2tog, yo, K1, yo, SKP, p2, repeat from * to end.

Rnds 2 – 5: *K5, p2, repeat from * to end.

Rnds 6 – 55: Repeat rnds 1-5 of Leg Lace pattern 10 more times. (8.25” to top edge of picot).

Rnd 56: Repeat row 1.

Rnds 57: Repeat row 2.

Rnd 58: *K5, p2, repeat from* four times, K5.

Transfer the last 2 stitches of Needle 3 to Needle 1, place locking stitch marker in row below. This will be your new BOR for heel.

Rearrange stitches as follows. Needle 1: 9 sts; Needle 2: 14 sts; Needle 3: 19 sts.

Rnd 59: (Set up row) p2, *K5, p2, repeat from * two times, K10, M1L, K9. (43 sts)

Heel Flap

The heel flap will be worked back and forth on Needle 3.

Rnd 1: Sl1 purlwise, p to end

Rnd 2: Sl1 knitwise, *K1, Sl1 purwise with yarn in back, repeat from * to last stitch, K1.

Rnds 3 – 24: Repeat rows 1 -2 a total of 11 more times or until heel flap measures 2”.

Rnd 25: Repeat row 1.

Heel Turn

The heel turn will be made with a series of short rows.

Rnd 1: Sl1, K10, ssk, k1, turn.

Rnd 2: Sl1, p3, p2tog, p1, turn.

Rnd 3: Sl1, knit to 1 st before the gap, ssk, k1, turn.

Rnd 4: Sl1, purl to 1 st before the gap, p2tog, p1, turn.

Repeat rows 3 – 4 until all stitches have been worked. (12 sts)

Gusset

You’ll now be working with 4 double point needles.

Gusset Lace Pattern

Rnd 1: P2, *K2tog, yo, K1, yo, SKP, p2, repeat from * two times.

Rnds 2 – 5: P2, *K5, p2, repeat from * two times.

Set up round: With needle 1, knit across heel flap sts. With the same needle, pick up and knit 12 sts. With needle 2, p2, K5, p2. With needle 3, *K5, p2, repeat from * one time. With needle 4, pick up and knit 12 sts and then with the same needle, knit 6 sts from needle 1. This will be your new BOR. Place locking stitch marker in row below. Stitch counts as follows. Needle 1: 18 sts; Needle 2: 9 sts; Needle 3: 14 sts; Needle 4: 18 sts.

Rnd 1: Knit. Needles 1 and 4 will be worked in stockinette stitch. Needles 2 and 3 will be worked in gusset lace pattern, beginning with row 1 of pattern.

Rnd 2: (Decrease) Knit to 3 sts before end of needle 1, k2tog, k1. Work in pattern across needles 2 and 3, K1, SSK, knit to end of rdn.

Rnds 3 – 16: Repeat rnds 1 – 2 a total of 7 more times (43 sts).

Foot

Needles 1 and 4 will continue to be worked in stockinette stitch. Needles 2 and 3 will continue to be worked in Gusset Lace pattern.

Rnds 1 – 30: Knit, remaining in pattern on needles 2 and 3. (Rnd 1 of foot begins with rnd 2 of the Gusset Lace pattern. Rnd 30 of foot ends with rnd 1 of Gusset Lace pattern)

This is where you can adjust the length of the sock. See pattern notes.

Rearrange stitches as follows. Needle 1 – 10 sts, Needle 2 – 12 sts, Needle 3 – 10 sts, Needle 4 – 11 Sts.

All remaining rnds will be knit in stockinette stitch.

Rnd 31: Knit to 2 sts before end of needle 2, k2tog, knit to end. (42 sts)

Rnds 32 – 35: Knit all stitches.

Toe

Rnd 1: (dec) Knit to 3 sts before needle 1, K2tog, k1, SM, k1, SSK, knit to end of needle 2, Knit to 3 sts before needle 3, K2tog, k1, SM, k1, SSK, knit to end of needle 4. (38 sts, 4 sts dec)

Rnd 2: Knit

Rnds 3 – 6: Repeat rnds 1 & 2 two more times (30 sts)

Rnds 7 – 10: Repeat rnd 1 four more times (14 sts) then, with needle 4, knit across stitches on Needle 1.

Transfer 3 sts from Needle to 3 back to Needle 2.

You’ll now have 7 sts each on Needles 1 and 2.

Close toe opening with Kitchener stitch.

Finishing

Wet block to shape. Weave in ends.
