Cherry Sweet Cropped Cardi

This design is inspired by popular cropped cardigans from the 50s. It’s knit from the top down with raglan shaping and has a unique brioche look with twisted reversible ribs at the cropped waist. You’ll love wearing this seamless cardi with your favorite black dress and comfy flats. Dress it up or down depending on the occasion!

Fine weight yarn Madelinetosh Tosh Sport (100% Wool; 270 yards [247 meters]/100grams): Scarlet, 3 (3, 3, 4, 4) skeins.

Needles: US size 4 (3.5 mm): 24” circular and a set of 4 DPNs; US size 3 (3.25 mm): 24” circular and a set of 4 DPNs

Body and Sleeve Separation

Row 1 (RS): *K to m, remove m, place next 58 (60, 64, 72, 80) sts on holder, remove m, CO 8 (10, 16, 16, 18) sts using the backwards loop cast-on method; rep from * once more – 180 (204, 228, 252, 276) sts on needle.

Row 2 (WS): Purl.

Row 3: Knit.

Row 4: Purl.

Rep Rows 3-4 for the next 5½”, ending with a RS.

Next Row (WS): K1, k2tog, k across row – 179 (203, 227, 251, 275) sts.

Next Row 1 (RS): With smaller needles and beg with Row 1 of Reversible Lace Pattern, work the 4-st rep over all sts.

Cont working Reversible Lace Pattern until the lace meas 4”.

Work 2 rows in Garter St (worked flat).

BO all sts.

Sleeves

Each Sleeve is worked in the round from the underarm on DPNs.

Place sts from the holder for Sleeve evenly onto larger DPNs.

With RS facing, beginning in the center of the underarm, pm to indicate beginning of rnd, pick up and k4 (5, 8, 8, 9) sts, pick up and k 1 st at the gap between the under arm and sleeve sts, k the rem Sleeve sts to the end of the rnd, pick up and k1 st at the gap between the under arm and sleeve sts, pick up and k4 (5, 8, 8, 9) sts, join to work in the rnd – 68 (72, 82, 90, 100) sts on needles.

Next Rnd (Dec): K3 (4, 7, 7, 8), k2tog, k to last 5 (6, 9, 9, 10), ssk, k to end of rnd – 2 sts dec’d; 66 (70, 80, 88, 98) sts.

Knit for 1″

Next Rnd (Dec): K1, k2tog, k to last 3 sts, ssk, k1 – 2 sts dec’d; 64 (68, 78, 86, 96) sts.

Ribbing

Change to smaller needles and work in K1, P1 Ribbing (worked in the rnd) for 1½”.

BO all the sts, being careful not to bind off too tightly.

Buttonband

Mark placement of 8 buttonholes on right front edge, with one placed ½” down from neck edge, one places ¾” up from lower edge, and the others evenly spaced in between.

Right Band

With smaller size needle and RS facing, starting at the bottom right front, pickup and k3 sts for every 4 rows along right front edge. The total number of sts picked up should be a multiple of 2 sts.

Work in K1, P1 Ribbing (worked flat) for ½”.

Buttonhole Row: With RS facing and maintaining est ribbing patt, BO 2 sts at every marker, finish the row.

Next Row: Cont in est ribbing patt, CO 2 sts over buttonhole.

Work ribbing as est until buttonband meas 1″

BO all sts, being careful not to bind off too tightly.

Left Band

Starting at top left front and RS facing, work as for right band, omitting buttonholes.

Work in ribbing for 1″.

BO all sts, being careful not to bind off too tightly.

Finishing

Weave in all ends.

Sew on buttons. Gently steam block the garment to desired measurement. yarn ball
