Cozy Cabled Socks

This unisex pattern is about to become your go-to pattern for socks. Classic and rich with cables, this delightful pattern looks great in a variety of colors.

Skill Level: Easy

Size: Women’s size 8

Gauge: 8 st/inch using size 1 needles

Materials

Yarn: Knit Picks Stroll Tweed (65% superwash merino wool, 25% nylon, 10% Donegal tweed; 231 yards [211 meters]/50 grams): Flagstone Heather (2 skeins)
Needles: US size 1 double-pointed needles (or size needed to obtain gauge)
Notions: Cable needle, tapestry needle for finishing

Special Stitches

Cable Stitch:
C4F: Place 2 sts on cable needle and hold in front, knit next two sts, return sts from cable needle to working needle, knit 2 sts.

Pattern Notes

These socks are made to fit a womens’ size 8 shoe. The cable ribbing makes a stretchy leg and foot so the only part of the sock that would need to be adjusted for other sizes would be the length of the foot.

Pattern

CO 72, distribute between double pointed needles, join.

Cuff

Rnds 1-20: K2 *p2, k4; repeat from * to last 2 sts, k2.

Leg

Rnd 1: K2, *p2, C4F, p2, k4; repeat from * to last 2 sts, k2.
Rnds 2-4: K2 *p2, k4; repeat from * to last 2 sts, k2.
Repeat leg rounds 1-4 eleven times more.

Heel

Place first 36 sts on one needle. These will be the only sts worked until you get to the gusset.
Row 1: Sl 1, *k1, sl 1; repeat from * ending with a k1, turn.
Row 2: Sl 1, purl to end of heel sts.
Repeat last 2 rows 15 times more for a total of 32 heel rows.

Turn Heel
Row 1: Sl 1, k19, ssk, k1, turn.
Row 2: Sl 1, p6, p2tog, p1, turn.
Row 3: Sl 1, k7, ssk, k1, turn.
Row 4: Sl 1, p8, p2tog, p1, turn.
Row 5: Sl 1, k9, ssk, k1, turn.
Row 6: Sl 1, p10, p2tog, p1, turn.
Row 7: Sl 1, k11, ssk, k1, turn.
Row 8: Sl 1, p12, p2tog, p1, turn.
Row 9: Sl 1, k13, ssk, k1, turn.
Row 10: Sl 1, p14, p2tog, p1, turn.
Row 11: Sl 1, k15, ssk, k1, turn.
Row 12: Sl 1, p16, p2tog, p1, turn.
Row 13: Sl 1, k17, ssk, k1, turn.
Row 14: Sl 1, p18, p2tog, p1, turn.
Row 15: Sl 1, k21, do not turn.

Gusset

Pick up 16 sts along the side of the heel, when you reach the next needle, continue in the leg cable pattern, pick up 16 sts along the other side of the heel, knit 11 to middle of turned heel. You should now have 27 sts on your first needle, 36 on the 2nd needle, and 27 on the 3rd.
Rnd 1: Knit to last 3 st of needle 1, k2tog, k1, continue in established pattern for needle 2, on needle 3, k1, ssk, k to end of needle.
Rnd 2: Knit all on needles 1 & 3, continue in pattern on needle 2.
Repeat these 2 rounds until 18 sts remain on each of needles 1 & 3. There will be 72 sts total.

Foot

Continue working foot using the gusset round 2 until the length is 2 inches shorter than desired length from heel to toe. For a woman size 8, I knit until there were a total of 29 cable twists from the end of the cuff to the end of the toe.

Toe

Rnd 1: Knit to last 3 st of needle 1, k2tog, k1; on needle 2, k1, ssk, k to last 3 st, k2tog, k1; on needle 3, k1, ssk, k to end.
Rnd 2: Knit all sts.
Repeat last two rounds until 32 sts remain. (8 sts on needles 1 & 3, 16 on needle 2)
Repeat Rnd 1 of the toe until 16 sts remain. (4 sts on needles 1 & 3, 8 on needle 2)
Knit 4 sts on needle 1 so the working yarn is in between needles 1 & 2. Place needle 3 sts on needle 1 so you have a total of 8 sts divided between two needles.
Cut yarn leaving a 10-12 inch tail. Thread the tapestry needle with the tail and finish off the sts using the Kitchener Stitch. Weave in all ends.
Repeat for 2nd sock.
