Lil’ Monster Vest

This adorable vest is worked in stockinette stitch, making it a cinch to knit. Whether your little ones don this on Halloween or wear it to keep warm during fall weather, you’ll love how cute they look!

Gauge: 20 sts and 26 rows = 4” [10 cm] with larger needles in st st 

Materials

Yarn: Patons Canadiana (100% acrylic; 205 yards [187 meters]/100 grams): #10725 Clearwater (MC, 1 (1, 1, 2) ball), #10712 Lime Juice (A, 1 (1, 1, 1) ball), #10628 Tangy (B, 1 (1, 1, 1) ball), #10008 Aran (C, 1 (1, 1, 1) ball)
Needles: US size 6 (4.0 mm) and US size 7 (4.5 mm) straight needles
Notions: 2 st holders, small amount of black and red yarn for mouth embroidery

Special Stitches

Stripe Pat A
Work in st st – knit RS rows, purl WS rows
B – 4 rows, A – 2 rows, C – 2 rows, A – 2 rows, these 10 rows form Stripe Pat A.

Stripe Pat B
Work in st st – knit RS rows, purl WS rows
B – 4 rows, MC – 2 rows, C – 2 rows, MC – 2 rows, these 10 rows form Stripe Pat B. 

Pattern Notes

The instructions are written for smallest size. If changes are necessary for larger sizes the instructions will be written thus ( ). Numbers for each size are shown in the same color throughout the pattern. When only one number is given in black, it applies to all sizes.
When working with more than 1 color in a row, wind small balls of colors to be used. Wind colors around each other where they meet, on WS, to avoid a hole at color change.

Pattern

Front

**With A and smaller needles, CO 50 (54, 58, 62) sts, break A, join MC.
Row 1 (RS): With MC, *k2, p2; rep from * to last 2 sts; k2.
Row 2: *p2, k2; rep from * to last 2 sts; p2.
Rep last 2 rows for 1½” [4 cm], ending on a 2nd row and inc 1 (1, 3, 3) st(s) evenly across last row. Break A.** (51 (55, 61 65) sts)
Change to larger needles and proceed in st st as follows:
Row 1 (RS): With MC, K7 (7, 9, 9). Knit Row 1 of Stripe Pat A across next 8 (8, 10, 10) sts, with MC, K36 (40, 42, 46).
Row 2: With MC, P36 (40, 42, 46), purl Row 2 of Stripe Pat A across next 8 (8, 10, 10) sts, with MC, P7 (7, 9, 9).
Stripe Pat A is now in position.
Rep last 2 rows, keeping cont of Stripe Pat A until work from beg measures approx 4½ (6, 6, 7½)” [11.5 (15, 15, 19) cm], ending on a Row 10 of Stripe Pat A.
Next Row (RS): With A, k7 (7, 9, 9), knit Row 1 of Stripe Pat B across next 8 (8, 10, 10) sts, with A, k36 (40, 42, 46).

Shape Neck
Keeping cont of Stripe Pat A, pat across 12 (13, 14, 15) sts; turn; leave rem sts on a spare needle.
Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 3 rows, then every following alt row twice more. (7 (8, 9, 10) sts rem)
Cont even until armhole measures 5 (5½, 6, 6½)” [12.5 (14, 15, 16.5) cm], ending on a purl row; BO.
With RS of work facing, slip next 13 (15, 15, 17) sts on a st holder, join MC to rem sts and knit to end of row.

Finishing

Neckband
Sew right shoulder seam. With RS of work facing, smaller needles and C, pick up and knit 12 (14, 16, 18) sts down left front neck edge; k13 (15, 15, 17) from front st holder; pick up and knit 12 (14, 16, 18) sts up right front neck edge; k23 (25, 25, 27) from back neck st holder, dec 2 sts evenly across. (58 (66, 70, 78) sts)
Beg on a 2nd row, work 7 rows in (k2, p2) ribbing as given for Front; BO in rib.

Armbands
Sew left shoulder seam; with RS of work facing, smaller needles and B, pick up and knit 58 (62, 66, 74) sts evenly along armhole edge.
Beg on a 2nd row, work 7 rows in (k2, p2) ribbing as given for Front; BO in rib.
With C, embroider eyes using satin st; embroider center of Eye with A as shown; with black yarn, work chain st mouth as shown; with red yarn, work satin st tongue as shown. Sew side and armband seams. yarn ball
