Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy Shawl

This is a sideways shawl that was inspired by the many facets of the sugar plum fairy, from her intricate costume of glittering appliques, to her tiara, to the shape of her tutu. A thin, slender crescent shawl with a garter body and a decorative open lace stitch pattern forms a delicate plum blossom panel amongst an airy, whimsical openwork border.

Pattern Notes

This shawl is worked sideways. It is increased over approximately the first 33% of the skein, worked even over the next approximate 33% of the skein’s total weight, and then decreased the rest of the yarn’s weight.

You will need to weigh your yarn on a scale before and as you work the shawl. If you are not using a scale, you MUST swatch to get gauge and follow the repeats of the sample of 8/10/8 (Increase/Even/Decrease).

Please keep in mind the size of your shawl will vary depending on your yarn yardage.

Chart Notes

When working RS (Right Side) (odd numbered rows), chart is read from right to left and

WS (Wrong Side) (even numbered rows), is read from left to right.

The stitch markers are placed where the Red Lines are on the chart, which separates the First, Second, and Third Sections.

The First section will always be 6 sts.

The stitch count for the Increase/Even/Decreases Sections will increase 6 sts every 12-row repeat (2 sts every other row), remain even in the Even Section, and decrease 6 sts every 12-row repeat (2 sts every other row).

The stitch counts of the Lace Edge section, the third section, increase and then decrease.

Note: The sample was worked with 8/10/8 repeats. Please remember, you need to repeat the sections according to your own yarn skein yardage unless you have gotten gauge.

CHART INSTRUCTIONS:

The sample was knit with 10/8/10 repeats. Please remember, you need to repeat the sections according to your own yarn skein yardage.

NOTES:

  • RS (Right Side) (ODD numbered rows) – CHART: The chart is read from RIGHT TO LEFT.
  • WS (Wrong Side) (EVEN numbered rows) – CHART: The chart is read from LEFT TO RIGHT.
  • There is no difference in the symbols on RS or WS, the symbols represent the stitch on either side of the work.
  • The stitch markers are placed where the Red Lines are on the chart, which separates the First, Second and Third Sections.
  • The First section will always be 6 stitches.
  • The Increase/Even/Decreases Section’s stitch count will increase 6 stitches every 12 row repeat (2 stitches every other row), remain even in the even section, and decrease 6 stitches every 12 row repeat (2 stitches every other row).
  • The stitch counts of the Lace section, the third section, increase and then decrease. These stitch counts can be found alongside the chart, on the left, in the yellow highlighted column.

CO 29.

Set-up Row 1: K6, pm, k2, pm, k21. (29)

Set-up Row 2: K21, sm, k2, sm, k6. (29)

  • Start working from the chart repeating Rows 1-12 increasing every other row until you have used close to 33% of your yarn.
  • Once you have ENDED INCREASING ON ROW 12, continue in pattern working EVEN, no longer doing the KFB increases, knitting to marker making no increase
  • Work even until you have used the next approximate 33% of your yarn. Stop working even when you have used close to 66% of your total yarn weight before you started.
  • Once you have ENDED WORKING EVEN ON ROW 12, start decreasing.
  • Continue in pattern WITH THE DECREASE CHART BELOW working Rows 1-12, decreasing every other row.
