Follow Your Arrow Cowl

A gorgeous cowl knit entirely in garter stitch features a large arrow motif. Perfect for knitters who do not want to do intarsia or stranded colorwork, this worsted weight cowl is worked from a combination of increases, decreases and striping.

Needles: US size 8 (5 mm): two 24” circular

Notions: Tapestry needle; blocking supplies

Pattern Notes

To carry a second color of yarn in the striped sections, knit the first st in the row, bring the unused color from back to front, knit the next st. On WS, knit to 1 st before the end of row, bring unused color from front to back, knit the next st.

Row 1: With C, pick up 44 sts, 1 in each garter ridge and CO edge. –  45 sts.

Row 2: Knit.

Rows 3-4: With B, knit.

Row 5: K1, ssk, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1 – 43 sts.

Row 6: Knit.

Rep Rows 5-6, 19 more times – 5 sts.

Row 45: K1, s2kp, k1 – 3 sts.

Row 46: Knit.

BO knitwise.

Section 3

Row 1: With D, beginning at the RS Section 1 CO, pick up 45 sts – 45 sts.

Row 2: Knit.

Row 3: K21, s2kp, k21 – 43 sts.

Row 4: K2, m1r, k to last 2 sts, m1l, k2 – 45 sts.

Row 5: With A, k21, s2kp, k21 – 43 sts.

Row 6: K2, m1r, k to last 2 sts, m1l, k2 – 45 sts.

Section 4

Using second needle and with RS facing, pick up 45 sts in A around the ridges of Section 2.

With WS facing, use the 3-needle BO to close Cowl.

Rnd 1: With RS facing, starting at the C stripe of Section 2, pick up 95 sts in C around the edge of Cowl and join in the rnd.

Rnd 2: Purl.

Rnd 3: With D, knit.

Rnd 4: Purl.

Rep Rnds 3-4 once.

BO knitwise in D.

Rep Rnds 1-6 on other edge of Cowl.

Finishing

Weave in all ends.

Wet block Cowl, being careful to open up your “quills” to match the width of Section 1.
