Willing and Cable Hat

This cable hat is a relaxing and simple design that makes for a fuss-free knit if you’re newer to color changes and cables. It’s also a great pattern to have on hand for a quick gift for yourself or for a loved one.

Skill Level: Easy

Size: Small (Medium, Large), finished measurement 18 (20, 22)” width x 8 (9, 9)” in length, without pompom.

Gauge: 12 sts and 16 rows = 4” [10 cm] in St st with larger needle, after wet blocking

Materials

Medium weight yarnYarn: Master Knit Victoria Aran (100% Acrylic; 344 yards [315 meters]/150 grams): Pink (A, 1 (1, 1) ball), Gold (B, 1 (1, 1) ball or 16 (18, 20) yards.

Needles: US size 10 (6.0 mm), US size 8 (5.0 mm) 24” circular

Notions: Markers, stitch holders, cable needle, tapestry needle, (1) faux fur pompom

Special Stitches

2/2 LC: Sl 2 sts onto cn, hold in front, k2, k2 from cn.

Pattern Notes

This pattern is worked in the round from the bottom up in stockinette stitch and a simple cable with double yarn for a chunky weight.

Color stripes are done by working a single strand in A and a single strand in B.

Techniques required are: Long Tail Cast On, decreasing, increasing, 2/2 LC cable.

Pattern

With smaller needles and using Long Tail Cast On method, CO 50 (56, 62) with A held doubled. Join work being careful not to twist sts, place a marker to indicate beg of rnd.

Rnds 1-4: *K1, p1*; rep from * to end of rnd.

Main Section

Change to larger needles.

Rnd 1 (Inc): *K12 (14, 15), m1; rep from * 3 more times, k2 (0, 2) sts. (4 sts inc’d, 54 (60, 66) sts)

Rnd 6: Cut one strand of A, leaving a 6” tail, join a single strand of B with rem single strand of A, k around.

Rnds 7-9: K around.

Rnd 10: Cut strand of B, leaving a 6” tail, join back single strand of A to work double, *k14 (16, 18), 2/2 LC; rep from * to end of rnd.

Rnds 11-14: K around.

Rnd 15: Cut single strand of A, leaving a 6” tail, join a single strand of B with rem single strand of A, k around.

Rnd 16: K around.

Rnd 17: Cut stand of B, leaving a 6” tail, join back single strand of A to work double, *k14, (16, 18), 2/2 LC; rep from * to end of rnd.
