Honeycomb Hat

Make a bee-line for this honeycomb inspired hat! Sized for everyone from baby to adult large, whoever you make it for is sure to think it’s the bee’s knees. Easy to memorize, this hat is a good introduction to colorwork. Plus, it makes a great scrap buster!

Gauge: 22 sts and 28 rows = 4” [10 cm] in colorwork after wet blocking

Medium weight yarnYarn: Cascade Yarn Cascade 220 (100% Wool; 220 yards [201 meters]/100 grams): 8010 Natural (MC, 1 (1, 1, 1, 1, 1) balls), 9669 Gold Fusion (CC, 1 (1, 1, 1, 1, 1) balls)

Needles: US size 6 (4.0 mm) 16” circular, US size 4 (3.5 mm) DPNs, US size 4 (3.5 mm) DPNs

Notions: Markers, tapestry needle

Pattern Notes

In order to ensure the hat fits, keep the floats (the yarn traveling across the wrong side of the knitting in the colour not being knit with) loose.

Ribbing

With CC and smaller needles, CO 72 (84, 90, 96, 102, 108) sts. Pm to indicate beginning of rnd, join being careful not to twist.

Ribbing Rnd: *K1, p1; rep from * to end of rnd.

Work Ribbing Rnd a total of 8 (8, 8, 10, 10,10) times.

Body of Hat

Switch to larger needles.

Using the Main Colorwork Chart, work Set Up Rnds 1-2.

Work Rnds 1-10 a total of 2 (2, 2, 3, 3, 4) times, then Rnds 1-3 once more.

Decrease Section

Sizes Baby (Toddler, -, Adult Small, Adult Medium, -) only

Work Rnds 4-7 a further 1 (1, -, 1, 1, -) times.

Work Rnd 8, stopping 3 sts before the end of the rnd.  Move beginning of rnd marker to this location.

All Sizes

Switch to DPNs when sts no longer fit comfortably on circulars.

Work Decrease Section according to chart or following written instructions.

Rnd 1: *With CC k1, with MC ssk, k1, k2tog; rep from * to end of rnd. (48 (56, 60, 64, 68, 72) sts)

Rnd 2: *With CC k1, with MC k3; rep from * to end of rnd

Rnd 3: *With CC k1, with CC sl1, k2tog, psso; rep from * to end of rnd. (24 (28, 30, 32, 34, 36) sts)

Rnd 4: *With CC k2tog, rep from * to end of rnd. (12 (14, 15, 16, 17, 18) sts)

Finishing

Break yarns leaving 12” tails. Draw CC through remaining sts and pull tight.

Weave in ends. Block.
