Woodland Bunny

Bunny can be seen gallivanting through the woods with her pal, Fox. Bunnies get cold sometimes, so it’s extra important to knit her a hat.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: Finished Measurements 10” body circumference x 5½” body height

Gauge: 20 sts and 28 rnds = 4” [10 cm] in St st before stuffing

18 sts and 28 rnds = 4” [10 cm] in St st after stuffing

Materials

Yarn:

Light Weight Yarn Universal Yarn Deluxe DK Tweed Superwash (90% Superwash Wool, 7% Acrylic, 3% Viscose; 284 yards [259 meters]/100 grams): 413 Smoke (MC), 1 ball; 410 Porcelain (B), 1 ball; 412 Ebony (C), 1 ball; 406 Aegean (D), 1 ball.

Needles: US size 4 (3.5 mm): set of dpns

Notions: Tapestry needle; polyester stuffing

Special Stitches

I-Cord: *K3, slide sts to other end of dpn and place in left hand; rep from *.

Pattern

Body

With B, CO 8 sts. Divide evenly among dpns and join to work in the rnd.

Increase Section

Rnd 1: Knit.
Rnd 2: *K1, m1; rep from * to end – 16 sts.
Rnd 3: Knit.
Rnd 4: *K2, m1; rep from * to end – 24 sts.
Rnd 5: Knit.
Rnd 6: *K3, m1; rep from * to end – 32 sts.
Rnd 7: Knit.
Rnd 8: *K4, m1; rep from * to end – 40 sts.
Rnd 9: Knit.
Rnd 10: *K5, m1; rep from * to end – 48 sts.

Work 28 rnds even in St st.

Decrease Section

Rnd 1: *K6, k2tog; rep from * to end – 42 sts.
Rnds 2-4: Knit.
Rnd 5: *K5, k2tog; rep from * to end – 36 sts.
Rnds 6-8: Knit.
Rnd 9: *K4, k2tog; rep from * to end – 30 sts.
Rnds 10-12: Knit.
Rnd 13: *K3, k2tog; rep from * to end – 24 sts.
Rnds 14-15: Knit.

BO all sts leaving a 12” tail for sewing on Head. With cast-on tail, sew cast-on edge closed.

Legs (make 2)

With MC, CO 12 sts. Divide evenly among dpns and join to work in the rnd.

Knit 26 rnds.

Foot

Switch to C. Knit 10 rnds.

Dec Rnd: (K2tog, k2, ssk) twice – 8 sts.

Place first 4 sts on one dpn, place last 4 sts on separate dpn. Graft the 2 sets of sts using kitchener st.

With C, using a running stitch, embroider a small heart on the Foot.

Stuff Foot firmly, using a blunt object such as the end of a pencil if needed to push stuffing down.

Stuff Leg very lightly.

Arms (make 2)

With MC, cast on 12 sts. Divide evenly among dpns and join to work in the rnd. Knit 20 rnds.

Foot

Switch to C.

Knit 10 rnds.

Dec Rnd: (K2tog, k2, ssk) twice – 8 sts.

Place first 4 sts on one dpn, place last 4 sts on separate dpn. Graft the 2 sets of sts using kitchener st.

With C, using a running stitch, embroider a small heart on the Foot.

Stuff Foot firmly, using a blunt object such as the end of a pencil if needed to push stuffing down.

Stuff Arm very lightly.

Head

Outer Ears (make 2)

With MC, CO 9 sts.

Row 1 (RS): Knit.
Row 2 (WS): Purl.
Rows 3-22: Cont in St st.
Row 23: K1, k2tog, k3, ssk, k1 – 7 sts rem.
Rows 24-28: Cont in St st.
Row 29: K1, k2tog, k1, ssk, k1 – 5 sts rem.
Rows 30-32: Cont in St st.
Row 33: K1, k3tog, k1 – 3 sts.

BO rem sts.

Inner Ears (make 2)

With B, CO 9 sts. Work as for Outer Ear.

With WS tog, sew an Inner Ear to an Outer Ear all the way around perimeter of both pieces, going through only the outer half-stitch of each side.

Sew Ears to Head, using photos as a guide. (Though you may wish to sew Ears on after making Hat to determine best placement.)

Sew Arms and Legs to Body.

Hat

With D, CO 48 sts. Divide evenly among dpns and join to work in the rnd

Rnds 1-4: *K1, p1; rep from * around.

Shape Brim with short-rows

Row 1 (RS): Work in patt over 16 sts, wrap next st and turn.
Row 2 (WS): Work in patt over 32 sts, wrap next st and turn.
Row 3: Work in patt over 28 sts, wrap next st and turn.
Row 4: Work in patt over 24 sts, wrap next st and turn.
Row 5: Work in patt over 20 sts, wrap next st and turn.
Row 6: Work in patt over 16 sts, wrap next st and turn.
Row 7: Work in patt over 12 sts, wrap next st and turn.
Row 8: Work in patt over 8 sts, wrap next st and turn.

Begin working in the round again

Rnd 1: Work in patt over 4 sts (to beg of rnd), work in patt over 48 sts, working tog wrapped sts.

Break D.

Switch to B.

Knit 2 rnds.

Ear Holes

Next Rnd: K13, BO next 5 sts, k18, BO next 5 sts, k13.

Next Rnd: K13, CO 5 sts, k18, CO 5, k13.

Shape Crown

Rnd 1: *K7, k2tog; rep from * around – 48 sts.
Rnd 2: *K6, k2tog; rep from * around – 42 sts.
Rnd 3: *K5, k2tog; rep from * around – 36 sts.
Rnd 4: *K4, k2tog; rep from * around – 30 sts.
Rnd 5: *K3, k2tog; rep from * around – 24 sts.
Rnd 6: *K2, k2tog; rep from * around – 18 sts.
Rnd 7: *K3tog; rep from * around – 6 sts.
Rnd 8: *K2tog; rep from * around – 3 sts.

Work 6 rows in I-Cord.

K3tog, fasten off.

Sew fastened off end of cord to beg of I-Cord at top of hat.

Weave in end. Put Hat on Head, pulling Ears out through Ear Holes.

Tail

With B, make a 1½” pompom.

Sew to Bunny butt.

Finishing

Weave in ends.yarn ball
