Queen of the Ice Mittens Knitting Pattern

Elbow-length mittens will come in handy as the days get shorter and colder, and these cabled masterpieces will be the perfect addition to your next skating trip, early morning walk or hayride.

Skill level: Beginner

Size: XS (S, M, L, XL) to fit 9 (10, 11, 12, 13)” / [23 (25.4, 28, 30.5, 33) cm] Arm circumference (measured at elbow); S (M, L) to fit 7 (7½, 8)” / [17.8 (19, 20.3) cm] Hand sizes (measured around the palm)

Gauge: 18 sts and 24 rows = 4” [10 cm] in St st in the round, using larger needles

Materials

Yarn: Knit Picks Swish Worsted (100% Superwash Merino Wool; 110 yards [101 meters]/50 grams): #25631 Dove Heather, 2 (3, 3, 4, 4) skeins

Needles: US size 9 (5.5 mm): DPNs; US size 7 (4.5 mm): DPNs

Notions: 3 Stitch markers; cable needle (cn); tapestry needle; small amount of waste yarn to hold thumb stitches

Special Stitches

K1, P1 Ribbing

Rnd 1: *K1, p1; rep from * around.

Rep Rnd 1 for patt.

Cable Pattern

Rnds 1-2: P2, k12, p2 – 16 sts.

Rnd 3: P2, 4/4 LC, k4, p2.

Rnds 4-8: P2, k12, p2.

Rnd 9: P2, k4, 4/4 RC, p2.

Rnds 10-12: P2, k12, p2.

Rep Rnds 1-12 for patt.

C7B – Sl 3 sts to cn, hold to back, k4, k3 from cn.

C7F – Sl 4 sts to cn, hold to front, k3, k4 from cn.

4/4 RC – Sl 4 sts to cn, hold to back, k4, k4 from cn.

4/4 LC – Sl 4 sts to cn, hold to front, k4, k4 from cn.

 

Pattern Notes

Each mitten is worked cuff down. There are five arm sizes to choose from. When you start the hand portion of the mitten, there will be a choice of three hand sizes.

Pattern

Cuff

With smaller needles and long-tailed CO method, CO 42 (46, 50, 54, 60) sts. Place marker to mark beg of rnds, join in the rnd, being careful not to twist sts.
Work 9 (9, 12, 12, 12) rnds of K1, P1 Ribbing, slipping end of rnd marker as you come to it here and throughout the rest of the pattern, until instructed otherwise.

Arm Sleeve

Change to larger needles.

Set-up Rnd: K13 (15, 17, 19, 22) sts, PM, p2, k12, p2, PM, k13 (15, 17, 19, 22) sts.

Work Cable Pattern over the center 16 sts marked off and AT THE SAME TIME, dec 1 st at beg and end of rnd every 7 rnds until 34 (34, 36, 40, 40) sts remain.

Work even in est patt until Sleeve meas 12 (13, 14, 15, 16)” / [30.5 (33, 35.6, 38, 40.6) cm].

Thumb Gusset

Note: From this point forward, there will be 3 sizes that correspond with a women’s small (medium, large) hand. Please see Sizes at the beginning of the pattern to choose the size appropriate for you or the recipient.

Knit 2 (3, 3) rnds even in est patt.

Left Mitten

Next Rnd: K6 (7, 9) sts, PM (this will be the first thumb gusset marker), k3, PM (this will be the second thumb gusset marker), k to end of rnd.

Right Mitten

Next Rnd: K25 (26, 28) sts, PM (this will be the first thumb gusset marker), k3, PM (this will be the second thumb gusset marker), k to end of rnd.

Both Mittens

Next Rnd (Inc): Maint Cable Pattern as est, work to first thumb gusset marker, SM, m1r, k to second thumb gusset marker, m1L, SM, k to end of rnd – 2 sts inc’d.
Work 2 rnds even.
Rep last 3 rnds 4 (5, 6) times – 44 (48, 54) sts.

Knit 1 rnd even.

Divide for Thumb

K1, move next 11 (13, 15) sts onto waste yarn or holder, using the backward loop method, CO 3 sts, k to end of rnd, removing marker that marked the end of the thumb gusset – 36 (38, 42) sts.

Palm

Cont in est Chart Pattern, work until Palm meas approx. 3¼ (2½, 3)” / [8.3 (6.4, 7.6) cm], ending with a Rnd 3 or Rnd 9.

Size S only

Next Rnd: Remove end of rnd marker, k4, PM, (this is the new end of rnd), k2, p2, k12, p2, k2, pm, k1, k14, k1 – 36 sts.

Sizes M (L) only

Next Rnd: Remove end of rnd marker, k4, PM, (this is the new end of rnd), k1 (2), p2, k12, p2, k1 (2), pm, k1, ssk, k14 (16), k2tog, k1 – 36 (40) sts

Shape Top

K1 (1, 2), p2, ssk, k8, k2tog, p2, k1 (1, 2), SM, k1, ssk, k to last 3 sts before marker, k2tog, k1 – 4 sts dec’d; 32 (32, 36) sts.

Work 1 rnd even.

Note: If Palm ended with Rnd 3 of chart, work next rnd as follow:

Next Rnd: K1 (1, 2), p2tog, k3, C7B, p2tog, k1 (1, 2), sm, k1, ssk, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1 – 4 sts dec’d; 28 (28, 32) sts.
Note: If Palm ended with Rnd 9 of chart, work next rnd as follow:

Next Rnd: K1 (1, 2), p1, ssk, k4, k2tog, p1, k1 (1, 2), sm, k1, ssk, k to last 3 st k2tog, k1 – 4 sts dec’d; 20 (20, 24) sts.
Work 1 rnd even.

Next Rnd: K1 (1, 2), p1, ssk, k2, k2tog, p1, k1 (1, 2), sm, k1, ssk, k to last 3 st k2tog, k1 – 4 sts dec’d; 16 (16, 20) sts.

Next Rnd: K1 (1, 2), p1, ssk, k2tog, p1, k1 (1, 2), sm, k1, ssk, k to last 3 st k2tog, k1 – 4 sts dec’d; 12 (12, 16) sts.

Next Rnd: K2tog to end – 6 (6, 8) sts.

Break yarn, thread onto tapestry needle. Pull through all remaining live sts.

Thumb

Place 11 (13, 15) sts from holder onto DPNs.
Pick up and k5 sts on Mitten – 16 (18, 20) sts.
Arrange sts onto DPNs, noting that the first st picked up on the Mitten is the first st of the rnd.

Knit 2 (2, 3) rnds.

Next Rnd: Ssk, k1, k2tog, k to end of rnd – 14 (16, 18) sts

Knit 7 (9, 11) rnds.

Size M only

Next Rnd: *K2tog, k2; rep from * to end of rnd – 12 sts.

Sizes S (L) only

Next Rnd: *K2tog, k2; rep from * to last 2 sts k2tog – 10 (13) sts.

All Sizes

Knit 1 rnd even.

Sizes S (M) only

Next Rnd: *K2tog; rep from * to end of rnd – 5 (6) sts.

Size L only

Next Rnd: *K2tog; rep from * to end of rnd, ending with k1 – 7 sts.

All Sizes

Break yarn, thread onto tapestry needle. Pull through live sts, secure, and weave in end.

Finishing

Weave in all rem ends. Darn holes at Thumb join, if necessary. Block.
