Snow Flurry Stocking

Take a traditional knitted Christmas stocking and add a flurry of little dots. This stocking is knit in one piece from the top down with a simple short row heel.

Skill Level: Easy

Size: 12” top circumference x 13” from top to heel

Gauge: 18 sts and 20 rows = 4” [10 cm] in St st using larger needles after light blocking.

Materials

Medium weight yarnYarn: Garnstudio DROPS Nepal (65% Wool, 35% Alpaca; 82 yards [75 meters]/50 grams): 8911 Sea Blue (MC, 2 balls), 1101 White (CC, 1 ball)

Needles: US size 7 (4.5 mm), US size 8 (5.0 mm) DPNs

Notions: Tapestry needle, 1 stitch marker

Abbreviations

W&T (on a RS row): Slip next st to right needle, bring yarn forward to front of work, return st to left needle, bring yarn to back of work, turn.

W&T (on a WS row): Slip next st to right needle, bring yarn to back of work, return st to left needle, bring yarn to front of work, turn.

Special Stitches

I-cord: *K all sts, slide sts to other end of DPN, pull yarn across back of sts; rep from * until required length.

Pattern Notes

Work from the top down with a short row heel. Toes are closed with Kitchener stitch.

Pattern

Using MC and smaller needles, CO 56 sts, join to work in the rnd being careful not to twist, PM for beginning of rnd.

Edging

Rnd 1: *K2, p2; rep from * around.

Rep Rnd 1, 4 more times.

Change to larger needles.

Knit 1 rnd.

Leg

Rnds 1-2: Using CC, knit.

Rnd 3: *Using CC k2, using MC k1, using CC k1; rep from * around.

Rnds 4-5: Using CC, knit.

Rnds 6-7: Using MC, knit.

Rnd 8: *Using MC k2, using CC k1, using MC k1; rep from * around.

Rnds 9-10: Using MC, knit.

Rep Rnds 1-10, 4 more times.

Rep Rnds 1-9 once more.

Heel

The heel is worked flat across the first 14 and last 14 sts using mc throughout, leave the remaining 28 sts on the needles.

Row 1 (RS): K13, W&T.

Row 2 (WS): P26, W&T.

Row 3: K to 1 st before wrapped st, W&T.

Row 4: P to 1 st before wrapped st, W&T.

Rep Rows 3-4, 5 more times.

Row 15: K to wrapped st, k wrapped st tog with wrap tbl, W&T.

Row 16: P to wrapped st, p wrapped st tog with wrap, W&T.

Row 17: K to wrapped st, k wrapped st tog with both wraps tbl, W&T.

Row 18: P to wrapped st, p wrapped st tog with both wraps, W&T.

Rep rows 17-18 until all wrapped sts have been worked ending on a WS row.

Next Row (RS): K across 28 heel sts, k across 28 held sts, k to m. Rearrange sts across all needles.

Foot

Rep Rnds 1-10 of Leg twice.

Rep Rnds 1-5 once more.

Break CC.

Toe

Use MC throughout.

Rnd 1: K28, pm, k to end.

Rnd 2: *K1, ssk, k to 3 sts before m, k2tog, k1, sm; rep from * once more. (4 sts dec’d)

Rnd 3: Knit.

Rep Rnds 2-3 once more.

Rep Rnd 2 only until 20 sts remain, break yarn leaving long tail.

Rearrange sts so that the first 10 sts are on 1 needle and the last 10 sts are on another needle. Join sts using Kitchener St.

Hanging loop

Using MC and smaller needles, pick up and k 3 sts at the top of the ribbing.

Work an I-cord for 4”.

BO all sts, break yarn leaving a long tail.

Form a loop and sew the BO edge next to where sts were picked up.

Finishing

Weave in all ends.

Block lightly.
