Garter Stitch Striped Shawl

A fun and easy geometric shawl, the Garter Stitch Striped Shawl uses two contrasting colors for a shawl that pops! The ruffle softens the shawl for a more feminine look, but if you prefer clean strong lines just leave the ruffle off.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: 53” x 13.5”

Gauge: 20 sts x 28 rows = 4” in garter st after wet blocking


Yarn: Cephalopod Bugga (70% merino, 20% cashmere, 10% nylon; 400 yards [366 meters]/113 grams): Holly Blue Butterfly (MC, 1 skein), Charaxes Tiridate (CO3) (CC, 1 skein)
Needles: US size 5 (3.75 mm) circular (32”) needle

Pattern Notes

This shawl is worked flat from end to end. Stitches are picked up and knit for the ruffle edging. The shawl has three sections, the right slanting section, the center wedge, and the left slanting section. To make this shawl longer and deeper just continue knitting Section 1 to increase the number of sts, work center section adding short rows until the last W&T is worked 2 sts before the end, and then work the same number of repeats in section 3 as you did in section 1.


Section 1: Right Slant

CO 2 sts.
Setup Row (WS): With MC K1, M1, k1. (3 sts)
Row 2 (RS): K2, M1, k1. (1 st inc)
Row 3 (WS): Knit.
Row 4: With CC knit to last st, M1, k1. (1 st inc)
Row 5: Knit.
Repeat Rows 2-4 29 more times. (63 sts) 

Section 2: Center Wedge

Rows 6-7: With CC knit.
Row 8: With MC K3, W&T.
Row 9: Knit.
Row 10: With CC Knit to 2 past last wrapped st, working wrap and wrapped sts together as you come to them, W&T.
Row 11: Knit.
Row 12: With MC Knit to 2 past last wrapped st, working wrap and wrapped sts together as you come to them, W&T.
Row 13: Knit.
Repeat Rows 10-13 13 more times.
Repeat Rows 10-11 once more.
Rows 14-15: With MC knit.
Row 16: With CC knit to 2 before end, W&T.
Row 17: Knit.
Row 18: With MC knit to 2 before last wrapped st, W&T.
Row 19: Knit.
Row 20: With CC Knit to 2 before last wrapped st, W&T.
Row 21: Knit.
Repeat Rows 18-21 14 more times.
Row 22: With CC knit; picking up wrapped sts as you come to them and working the wraps and wrapped sts together.

Section 3: Left Slant

Row 23: Knit.
Row 24: With MC knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. (1 st dec)
Row 25: Knit.
Row 26: With CC knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. (1 st dec)
Row 27: Knit.
Repeat Rows 24-27 30 more times. (3 sts)
Row 28: With MC k2tog, k1. (2 sts)
Row 29: K2, break yarn and pull through rem sts.

Ruffle Edging

Pick up every other st along the bottom curved edge of the shawl. This will be the side without the increases or decreases. *Pick up and k1, yo; rep from * to end.
Row 1 (WS): Purl.
Row 2 (RS): Knit.
Repeat Rows 1-2 6 more times.
Bind off as follows: K2, *slip 2 sts from right needle to left, k2tog tbl, k1; rep from * to end. (1 st rem). Break yarn and pull through remaining st


Weave in ends and trim. Wash and block using wires to straighten out the top edge and pins to pin out the curved bottom edge. yarn ball
